"This is one issue on which Senator Thompson is rock solid and on solid ground. His “originalist” interpretation of the 2nd Ammendment being and individual right guaranteed by the constitution is right on target. This is one issue where his “FREDERALISM” won’t hurt him. However, to this citizen, his FREDeralistic stands on abortion and the homosexual agenda hurts him.

So you really want the federal government telling everyone what they can and can't do in EVERY facet of their lives? That is not what I think of when I hear the word "conservative" FRiend.

No of course I don’t. However, there some areas where the federal government, thanks to the SCOTUS, has invaded areas that did originally belong to the states (abortion & homosexual rights or prohibition). If back in 1973, RoevWade had not been ruled, then abortion would only be legal in very few, if any states. If the supreme court would stay out of the business of telling states they can’t have anti-sodomy laws, then it would be possible to isolate them in certain parts of the country that have already gone down the sewers.

Unfortunately, appointing “strict constructionists” judges is NOT enough...they must also be originalists. This means they rule in accordance with what the original intent of the constitution or ammendments were. For instance, they ammendment to protect ex-slaves to give them due process should NOT be extrapolated to others. That was not the original intent of the ammendment. If you extrapolate you are engaging in the “living document” theory that has caused so many problems.

Additionally it is just not realistic to think that judicial appointments alone is going to turn the tide on abortion and the homosexual agenda. Even though it is a very long shot, the country needs to go ahead with constitutional ammendments that grant “right to life” to the unborn and forever define marriage as one man married to one woman (I would take that so far as to define a man or woman as one who is genetically so...not by surgery).

Because of Senator Thompson extreme FREDeralism (his variety of federalism) he won’t support, even in lip service, the desire of a significant number to get this done, or at least keep trying. It is killing his campaign, IMO, and that is not a good thing. He could sew up the nomination tommorrow if he would just embrace the existing GOP platform and stop alienating the morals/social/values conservatives.

Whether you consider this conservative or not is actually irrelevant. More than 25% of the GOP’s base does. Fred cannot win without that base. IMO - of course I could be wrong - I often have been.

Government functions based upon compromise. The entire constitution was based upon compromises to accommodate various groups. When a potential leader cannot learn to carry out a principled compromise, he/she becomes ineffective in leading a republic.
