In an effort to stop drug and alcohol abuse in school-aged children, the Northport-East Northport school district is hosting a series of mandatory forums this month for parents, headed by a Community Drug and Alcohol Task Force, in order to promote education, dialogue and awareness.

The task force is made up of more than 60 community members, including health professionals, attorneys, law enforcement agents, parents and mental health workers. They developed the forums, which are being held for the first time, because they feel strongly that parents should be aware of what’s going on with their children beginning at the transitional period that starts at grade 6.

According to John L. Lynch, assistant superintendent for pupil services and chairman of the task force, “we are hoping to make an impact, by engaging our parents in a joint effort with our community in getting kids through the high school and middle school years healthily.”

“Ultimately," he said, "we want to teach them how to make good decisions.”

How can a school district force the parents to attend mandatory forums? If the parents (caregivers) don't attend do the children get expelled?

Hi I agree that the school students should not be addicted to drugs and alcohol. They got this habit from their friends circles only. If they don't want to do it, their friends force them to do so. ============================================= Kate Alcohol Rehabilitation
