And are they really friends, or just people that share the same bad habit? I talk with kids all the time I end up getting appointed to represent in juvenile court. Most all of the pot smoking kids will say that “everyone gets high,” or at least just about everyone they know gets high. Everyone doesn’t get high, they’re just hanging around all the people that get high. I can remember my days as a pot smoking teenager. When we’d ask “is he cool?” about someone new, we weren’t really asking if he was a good guy who would make a good friend, we wanted to know if he would tell on us. If he smoked pot, he wouldn’t tell on us, and he might even be able to help us find some if our sources were out. That made him “cool.” Never mind that a lot of these “cool” people were people we would have never hung out with if not for having marijuana in common. Looking back, some of these “cool” people were not so cool at all. Then again, most of the people I hung out with as a kid did great in life, even though most all of them smoked pot when we were younger and some still do. I was a teen in the late 70’s, early 80’s, and it really did seem like everybody smoked pot back then. I don’t know any who remained heavy users (wake and bake, smoke all day) that achieved any great success in life, although I do know of some who did just fine. Those who smoke pot who really excel throughout life tend to be those who set limits on how much and how often they’ll smoke it. Of course most drinkers who drink all day don’t exactly have great success in life either. Moderation is key. Most of us though stopped messing with pot a long time ago though. It just seems to lose its appeal for most who do it as they get older.

People who have emotional/mental issues overindulge in whatever things they like to indulge in. People who don't have problems discipline their indulgences whatever they may be.

Of course heroin, crack, meth and the like aren't forgiving of casual indulgence but pot is nothing like those things. Coffee and tobacco are far more like them than pot though still a far cry away.
