LOS ANGELES — A pregnant woman was killed and two others injured after a brawl broke out involving as many as 30 young women, authorities said. The fight began about 2:30 p.m. Monday in South Los Angeles. Police said one of the women jumped into her car and struck the three victims. The woman killed was eight months pregnant and another victim was in critical condition and expected to lose her leg, authorities said. None of the victims' identities were released. Unique Bishop, 21, fled but turned herself into authorities and was booked for investigation of murder, police said. She is being held on $1 million bail.

Looks like Unique will be closer to her gang boyfriend she was fighting over for a long time. She's charged with two counts of murder in connection with the death of Shontae Treniece Blanche

but turned herself into authorities

That's just great. She runs down 3 people and gets a government job over the rest of us as a result - she has become authorities.

they meant she turned into Authoritaz!

I am sorry. I feel bad injecting humor into this sad event. I keep thinking of the pregnant girl just back from her grandfather’s funeral, and the baby in the womb. They will get a second chance in the coming paradise. God bless them and never forget them.

No, not all Freepers are racists, but there does appear to be a strong racist undertone at Free Republic. Blacks, Hispanics, people of Middle Eastern descent - all are subject to prejudices here.

Go back and read through this thread and tell me that no participant has automatically made assumptions because of a name, and then made further assumptions based on the first assumption.

And anyone who speaks of lack of balls while sitting behind a computer is just laughable.

But, if circling the wagons and defending the buffoons is your thing, go for it.

Blacks, Hispanics, people of Middle Eastern descent - all are subject to prejudices here.

Prejudice, yes — but prejudice based upon real-world experience. I judge individuals on a case-by-case basis, but years of living in the real world force me to prejudge groups of people on the basis of experience. Individual blacks, Hispanics, and Middle Easterners get the benefit of the doubt, but when speaking of blacks, Hispanics, and Middle Easterners en masse, only a fool would disregard what their eyes and ears have seen in the past. Prejudice in this sense is not only entirely justified, it's the rational response to life in an urban environment.

And why do white people share these prejudices? From what I've seen, it's not an issue of color, but of culture. Cultural differences between whites and other groups exist; are we supposed to cover our eyes and ears and pretend otherwise?

Racism, on the other hand, is something entirely different. Racism is the belief that people of one skin color are inherently superior to people of other skin colors based upon race alone. Only an idiot believes such nonsense. I have never read anything on FR even remotely advocating such a patently stupid idea, nor do I hold such a belief to be true.

Why do people associate ghetto names with ghetto culture? Experience. Just as white people with certain names (e.g. Cletus) are assumed to be "trailer trash" until proven otherwise, black people with certain names (e.g. Unique) are assumed to be "ghetto trash" until demonstrated to the contrary. This isn't fair, but it's honest — it's based on real life experience. Upon searching police records, one will find only a few white convicted meth-lab operators named Roderick Blaine Fauntleroy; a similar search will reveal that only a tiny percentage of black or Hispanic gang members named Aloysius Charles Washington.

We have got to quit acting like real life is some TV show. Real life is not TV. On TV, street gangs usually consist of a white guy with a Mohawk, an Asian kung-fu dude, a gay Hispanic woman lock-pick, and a black computer nerd in a wheelchair. In real life, street gangs are segregated by race, and seldom have differently abled or gender-integrated memberships. On TV, black ghettos are full of hardworking, honest single moms just trying to raise their kids right. In real life, black ghettos are full of players, pimps, working girls, and drug dealers. On TV, white rural people are depicted as "deep", financially-secure, open-minded spiritual types, living in rustic cabins and focused on nature, craftsmanship, and folk music. In real life, white rural people tend to be working class members of Evangelical churches, live in prefabs, trailers, or tract houses, and entertain themselves with TV sports, hunting, and Nashville-style country pop. Real-life Hispanic barrios are not the colorful, fiesta-like villages TV depicts; they are much more likely to be collections of shabby, dilapidated houses, painted garishly and sporting multiple used pickup trucks parked on the lawn. These facts may make you feel uncomfortable, but they are reality. Ignoring reality is the first step towards madness.

Like it or not, we live in a multicultural empire. If the nation is to survive, Americans are either going to have to deal with our cultural differences honestly and openly, or continue to play Let's Pretend and ignore the problems until the whole mess explodes. I know which option I prefer.

I think Chris Rock said it best “Women hate Women”

It's just a darn good thing that women are *never* violent. */sarcasm*

What is with all the jokes? A pregnant woman was killed.

Would it be *less* tragic if a non-pregnant woman were killed?

But I digress... I have a question about this pregnant woman. The LA Times article mentioned she was married to a prisoner and was 5 months pregnant. So how likely is it that the incarcerated husband was the father of her baby...I mean fetus?

Unique. She'll probably be the only 'Unique' on the cell block.

Nah...she's unique just like everyone else is. What a stupid name.

If you're pre-judging groups, where's the opportunity to make an individual assessment?

And then you have a situation (here) where you have people glad-handing and back-slapping each other as they... confirm their prejudices?

I can't wait to hear how this is not some sort of superiority complex.

I judge individuals when I meet them. When I encounter groups of people with whom I am not acquainted, I am forced to prejudge them based upon similar encounters until I have more data.

And what's so bad about "confirming prejudices"? Prejudices are based upon real-world experience; to "confirm" them is to confirm reality — an unnecessary and unreasonable act.

It's very simple: prejudices and stereotypes exist for a reason, and that reason is that they are based upon fact. To assume that a person named Unique is a lower-class black is a good assumption, because, in most people's experience, many lower-class blacks actually have stupid fake-African names like that. Likewise, it only makes sense to assume that a person named Buford Dale Bumpass is a working-class rural Southern white... or that the group of young Latin men standing out in front of the paint store are illegals from Mexico... or that you are more likely to be raped, robbed or killed by a young black male than a middle-aged Jewish lady. Making these assumptions does not mean that you hate rural whites, Hispanics, or black people — it simply means that you live in the real world. Statistically, young black males do commit more violent crimes than middle-aged Jewish females; statistically, the guys outiside the paint store are almost certainly illegals from Mexico; "Buford Dale" is a typical rural, Southern white name. How does recognizing these facts make for a superiority complex?

No race is intrinsically superior to any other. The superiority factor is limited to cultures. Some cultures are simply better than others in terms of the quality of life their members enjoy. Euro-American, Judeo-Christian culture is demonstrably superior to all other cultures, and the proof is in the quality-of-life pudding. Black ghetto culture, Islamic culture, and Hispanic peon culture have an overall track record of producing misery, failure, and suffering. While I absolutely deny the title of "white supremacist", I proudly admit to being a "cultural supremacist", and it is my hope that someday Euro-American, Judeo-Christian culture will be the overall "default" culture for all human beings.
