I visited the website of Phyllis Schlafly, president of the national Eagle Forum, and Betsy Hagan, Arkansas director of the conservative Eagle Forum, which can be found at this here:

http://www.eagleforum.org/misc/bio.html

Huckabee detractors are constantly quoting these two. After looking at their website, I can't for the life of me understand why their opinion matters more than the long list of duely elected Arkansas Republicans who are listed above.

Face it, Shlafly and Hagan are just two ladies who don't happen to like Huckabee.

Not quite. Phyllis Schlafly stopped the ERA in its tracks, IMHO almost singlehandedly. She was strong in promoting conservative thought in the Republican party. IMHO [again] the conservative party would not be what it is today without her. She wrote a book about missle defense and promoted it, around the time Reagan was starting to talk about it. She was the backbone of the Republican party before they ever had one [if they have one now, people would disagree about]. She is a lady and with plenty of backbone. She just isn’t some lady who doesn’t like Huckabee.

She took on Henry Kissinger when he was an important person and IMHO she bested him in the general debate on the topic. She’s Jeanne Kirkpatrick who never held an office. She stood behind Reagan on the important issues that he talked about.

You’re free to disagree with her, I do on one subject, but she does have reputation and character and a solid conservative leadership history.

I’m not wanting to beat up on you here, but the statement you made astounds me.

Do you know what the ERA was? The Equal Rights Amendment, a constitutional amendment. To stop it, do you even have a clue as to what Phyllis Schlafly had to do? It took years, it passed through the Congress and was going through the state legislatures. She went on national talk shows including Phil Donahue. The feminazis really beat up on her. Talk about the politics of personal destruction, they tore into her about everything about her person and nothing about the ERA. She made legal arguments as to why it was wrong. They said you aren’t qualified to speak about it because you aren’t a lawyer.

Mrs. Schlafly bore up under it like a pure lady, grace under fire. She went to law school, already had a bachelor’s degree. Crammed for weeks to pass the bar exam. Another person who took the exam with her said she showed up like she hadn’t slept for quite a while, with a scarf over her head because she hadn’t had time to do her hair, and she passed the bar exam on the first try.

The ERA almost passed, my state was one of the last ones. Jimmy Carter and Rosalyn Carter were making calls to legislators in my state, personally appealing for passage of the ERA. Mrs. Schlafly got out hundreds of housewives to the state legislature in Illinois and stopped it there, as well as my state and stopped it here. It was just shy of passage, it would not have taken much for it to have passed. If people had ignored it and not spoken up it would have passed. It was really similar to the recent immigration bill, but much worse. More of a close call.

So for you [although I’m sure your intentions were not this way] to say she is “just a lady who doesn’t happen to like” Huckabee is a disrespectful slam.

Would you go to law school when you had teenagers at home just to stop a bad piece of legislation? That didn’t happen overnight. She has commitment and character and a reputation that is deserving of respect.

She also has spoken once as if she doesn’t like my favorite candidate, but I respect her and take her seriously. She is not some frivolous woman.
