Huckabee lost my vote when he called Arkansas Senate Bill 206, requiring proof of citizenship for voting, "inflammatory... race-baiting and demagoguery."

I googled Senate Bill 206, which you refer to. It appears that this bill would have made it a crime for a medical professional in Arkansas to provide life-saving care to an illegal immigrant who had been in an accident. If this is the case, then good for Governor Huckabee in opposing it!

IMHO, illegal immigration is a serious problem which must be dealt with. (Huckabee is strongly anti-illegal immigration, as shown by Post 6 above.)

Still, illegal immigrants are people and it would be inhuman of us to deny medical care to one of them who had been in an accident and was at risk of dying. So, I don't see your point.

I'll paste the information I found about Huckabee's opposition to this Arkansas senate bill below.

Dear [InboxNews],

I would like to take a moment to clarify a few things my opponent said about me that are misleading and untrue.

You sent us a link to an article he posted regarding my record. In that article he said I denounced Senate Bill 206 which "would have required proof of citizenship to register to vote and would have required state agencies to report suspected cases of people living in the country illegally." This is true, but I would have gladly supported a different Bill with the same requirements listed above. The reason I opposed Bill 206, and called it "un-Christian" is because it prohibited emergency rooms from performing life-saving medical procedures if a patient could not prove their legal status. I think it is abhorrent to let anyone, regardless of legal status, die on the steps of an American hospital because the doctors would face prosecution for treating someone if they were here illegally. If Tancredo thinks that sounds just, I don't think any sane American would want him as President .

The article also said I supported a Bill making state scholarships available to students who were here illegally. That is true, but I only proposed making those scholarships available to students who had graduated from AR schools and met all other requirements and who, after turning 18, had applied for and were being considered for citizenship. There were too many children of immigrants, both legal and illegal, who were not registered as citizens and who worked hard to graduate from high school with good grades an had absolutely no opportunities. I do not believe in punishing children for their parents mistakes. The parents were the ones who brought their children here illegally, they had no choice in the matter. Can you imagine growing up in the US, attending our schools, and graduating with 4.0 average, only to be told you could not go to college, and in fact had to return to a country where you knew no one?

Finally, the article quoted CNN saying I supported Bush's immigration bill. I don't know where that quote came from or if it was ever even published anywhere except Tancredo's site, but I opposed the recent immigration bill from the start.

I didn't sign the "No Amnesty" pledge because it was a silly piece of campaign propaganda cooked up by Tancredo. Candidates don't make pledges for each other to sign, and he knows that. I am sorry that he sank to that level of attention-grabbing nonsense.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope you will always review any information from any political campaign very carefully.

Sincerely,

Mike Huckabee
