I'm not at liberty to say everything I know, but the consensus among professionals is that he got disoriented in the fog. Visibility that morning was nil, so it could happen.

Of course they also need to look at the instrumentation and I really hope they find something there.

The Port Pilots are an elite, well-paid group. They carry captain's license insurance. They make well over 100K per year. I believe that they are part of the Master, Mates and Pilots union.

Work hours for pilots are horrid. Basically they can be out in any kind of weather 24/7. I forget what their shifts are like, maybe someone else knows. I do know that captains are limited to twelve hours under way in a 24 hour period. Most likely seniority gets you better hours.

Nepotism always comes into play with a well-paying job. It depends on the kid and if they want to go to Cal Maritime to get their license and then go out and get the sea time.

Reference my post on subsequent article at:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1922993/posts

“Typical great reporting by MSM. Yesterday the ship was 920 ft in length, today 810 ft, and yesterday the ship was a Han Jin Containership which is S.Korean, not Chinese. Wonder what we’ll be told next.”

However, Thank you for the note.

Who cares about the ship?! We now have an ecological disaster in the Bay. Sixteen beaches are closed. Waterfowl are covered in oil. It will take years to recover from this. Click here, here (for a list of articles) and here (for pix).

Looks like Capt. John Cota will die a job-less, broke man.

>>There might have been a failure of electronics, said Capt. Pete McIsaac, president of the San Francisco Bar Pilots Association. “When you are in the fog, you rely heavily on electronics,” he said.<<

You’re not completely crazy, the side of the Busan definately says Hanjin, but such things are commonplace when dealing with the Chi-coms. The ship that brought all the AK-47s into Oakland in 94 also had Hanjin painted on the side, and it was also COSCO owned.

All pilots have incidents and mishaps on their records, and I’m sure that Capt. Cota was relying on the best info he had available to him. I’m guessing that there had to be a radar or sonar problem that caused them to rely on GPS or GNSS, which can be wrong by 10 meters very easily.

Hmmmmm...may be time to look deeply into the South Korean HanJin Group to see if there are connections. Next project.

I found no connection perusing both COSCO and HanJin sites, however due my background in the Container Shipping Industry I am aware that it is not unusual for such organizations to lease/charter equipment such as these vessels amongst one another. The Busan which is apparently named for the Port City in S. Korea formerly known as Pusan may be leased/chartered to the COSCO Gp.

Just an educated guess.

No, all of COSCO’s ships are deliberately misnamed. The article that b4ranch posted a link to hit it on the head.

The word on the Bay is that he has made his last transit. I am very sorry for him and for his family.

The press and the local politicians will vilify him for their own gain and sport. They are like sharks.

Yes, on this morning’s front page, the oil spill is exaggerated a hundredfold.

I just took a walk and I saw nothing on the shoreline. I hope that means they’ve done a good job cleaning up.

That’s what you get for reading the CC Times; if you read the Chron you’d know that because of this oil spill we are all going to die.
