Student was attacked for ‘nothing,’ mother says
The Cumberland Times-News ^ | November 7, 2007 | Jeffrey Alderton

The mother of a 15-year-old Allegany High School student who was the victim of a beating by another student Monday in a school hallway said her son’s jaw was broken in half by the attack.

Brenda Beal said her 5 foot 4 inch, 115-pound son, Hayden Tinsley, underwent two surgeries since he was rendered unconscious during the incident.

“It wasn’t just two kids fighting in the hallway. My son’s jaw was broke in half. He was sucker-punched, his face slammed into a locker and then he was banged face first into a fire extinguisher. He was unconscious on the floor, blood was everywhere and then he was kicked in the face,” said Beal before heading to Memorial Hospital where her son remained hospitalized this morning.

“He underwent two surgeries. They had to wire his jaw and wire his mouth shut. They cut from his ear to his chin to put more screws in to keep his jaw in place. Those screws will be in there for the rest of his life,” she said.

As to the motive for the attack, Beal said it was for “nothing.”

What’s most depressing about this story is that it isn’t all that shocking.

We never seem to run out of reasons to homeschool, do we?

This exact same thing happened to a kid in my high school class. A senior (at the time) beat the living hell out of this guy because of a ‘he said, she said’ deal (which, on investigation turned out to be a game of telephone gone horribly awry.) Long story short: the freak that attacked the other kid had his ass sued off (the victim had his eye socket shattered, among other things) though he was never prosecuted for assault—something I’d imagine *would* happen today.

When my son gets old enough to go to school, I’m going to make sure that he’s fully trained in the martial arts, preferably Jeet Kune Do, so that he can defend himself from school yard thugs such as the assailant in this case.

There are more and more monsters in those kind and peaceful neighborhood schools.

It’s sad: I grew up in this town. There were a few High School fights, really not many that I remember and certainly nothing where a kid’s jaw had to be reconstructed.

Mine will learn MMA and Filipino martial arts but also how to be aware of his surroundings and walk away when possible.

I studied Jeet Kuen Do for many years when I was young (JR. High & High School) and I would vouch for it. Although it is based in Gung Fu, it has more of an open style and is one of the more useful martial arts. Also look into Silat.

My 11 year old was sucker punched by a freshman at a football game because of some sort of he said/she said BS going on under the bleachers.

My son is 5’11” and is often mistaken for older and to the freshman’s credit, when he found out he’d been prodded into assaulting a sixth grader as a joke came and apologized to my son.

Some kids take delight into manipulating others into really stupid stuff.

Look into Krav Maga, the Israeli martial art. Exceptionally good at disabling or killing your attacker instantly. Very good also at disarming someone with a gun or knife and applying a lethal blow.

My 16 year old is a blue belt in Okinawan karate; damned deadly stuff (just watch that episode on “Human Weapon”; chilling).

He’s unreal good at it. He’s skinny, wiry....damned fast......and I pity the poor sumbitch, no matter the size, who screws with ‘im.

I’m his dad, I have 40 pounds and years of weightlifting on ‘im............and I wouldn’t really want to tangle with the kid.

This 'kind and peaceful' neighborhood school is where I graduated almost 30 years ago. We had our moments there. But an ass-beating this vicious was unheard of. I'll be reading the paper closely and e-mailing family to learn more about this little vermin - there's been a marked increase in hard drugs surfacing in the area in the last few years, and it wouldn't surprise me to find out his family lives in some dilapidated meth-lab duplex on Centre Street.

Bingo! Krav Maga. IT is designed from the ground up for exactly that kind of situation. Uses the best, easiest and most effective moves from all forms. Absolutly the way to go.

I feel bad for the kid.

I was small until my Junior year and the bullying got to the point that I carried a length of chain with a pad lock on the end of it(plausibly for my dog ;)). Pulled it out once and was ready to use it. The “tough” took one look and said “I’m tellin!” and I reminded him why I pulled it out, because of him. Word spread, I was left alone after that. When I turned 16, I grew to over 6’, worked out, and got beefed up(185ish, oh for that again) and no one even thought about it after that.

Got it! Thanks!

A very close buddy of mine has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He's really hard core about it, and watching him fight is just like watching Spiderman or Wolverine fight in the movies. He's THAT good...

While he was still in high school, his family moved from Virginia to northern Kentucky. At his new school, the first thing that the local bully did was look him up and try to shove him around. Let me tell you guys, the dude did not know what hit him when my buddy opened a can of whup a$$ on him. The fight was over in about three seconds, and afterward, no one even thought about picking on him, ever. Moreover, he suddenly became a first-class chick magnet, but he never let it go to his head, and he stayed true to his training in only using his skill as the absolute last resort.

This kid was sucker-punched. Even the best martial arts training isn't going to protect him when he is assaulted from behind and slamed into a fire extinguisher.

The real problem is that we have f'ing sociopaths walking school hallways who will just as quickly maim a kid for life for absolutely no reason and then sleep well at night.

I hope this monster is charged with assault and I hope his proud parents are sued to their last nickel.

Cumberland Police arrested the suspect at the scene of the Sedgwick Street school on a charge of first-degree assault. He was placed in juvenile detention pending a hearing in juvenile court.

Shocking, I tell you.

Shocking that they left out the part of the story where some schumk tells us "what a nice kid" the thug was.
