Damn. I received a Canadian inheritance a few years back that I got about 0.79 on. Wish the sweet old gal had hung on for a couple more years.

Um, when's the last time you went shopping in Canada?

Er, yesterday, and the day before, and mostly all the time.

Prices for consumer goods are typically 10% to 20% higher there even before their 15% sales tax kicks in.

The article states that Canadians are paying duty and taxes at the border.

It's quite worth the trip for bargain-hunting Canadians -- they wouldn't make it otherwise.

Or, some people could just be stupid.

;-)

People aren’t stupid. Wages (in either country) tend to fluctuate much less than exchange rates do. If you are making $15.00 an hour in Canada, and the Canadian dollar strengthens relative to the U.S. dollar, then Canadians WILL have increased buying power, even with all the added costs of travel and duty. You do have to also consider the higher sales tax rates in Canada AND the fact Canadians do try to avoid the duty (by wearing the clothes over the Rainbow Bridge).

I was in a drug store today and they had a sign that said US prices on all books and magazines. I think that will pretty much be the norm now if the rate stays anywhere close to par. I have also heard pretty much anything newly printed will no longer have a US and Canadian price anymore. Another pleasant surprise has been since most sellers on eBay are US based for the first time the price I am paying if I win is less than the US price. Since eBay began that is a first. There is still a premium on the shipping sometimes but any break is welcome.

Great point. Thanks for the historical perspective. And if a Democrat were president right now, the media would be extolling the lower dollar for driving up the GNP and US exports. Of course the Democratic president would be given mass kudos for his wisdom in letting the dollar drop, as if he control over it, to help boost US manufacturing. Didn’t the same Democrats and media leftists decry the atrophy of the US manufacturing sector? Well guess what, we’ve found a way to help revive it here.

On the show Chuck, Chuck works at a Best Buy clone called “Buy More.” Buy More’s motto is: “When you buy more, you save more. And when you save more, you can buy more. And when you buy more, you save more. It all starts when you BUY MORE.”

What the Albertan politicians did was wrong, and they have been behaving like Venezuelans

In what manner? This is an honest question, and I'm not trying to be an arse.

The rest of your comments are right on the button. Thank you.

New Yorkers, New Jersey, are about equal.
Both loud and rude.
The line we love here is everything is better from whatever craphole they came from.
Then why are they here?

My new son-in-law is from Manchester. His parents came over to meet my daughter and stayed three weeks.
They couldn’t believe the prices compared to England. They pay $8.00 for a liter of gas. They pay 8 pounds for steak and “trainers” are twice as expensive there as well as all clothing. They couldn’t believe that WalMart now carries the “George” label which is English and they could buy them here much cheaper than back home.
The only thing that they found more expensive here than in England were used cars.
We won’t even get on the subject of health care.
They believe that their healthcare and welfare system is what makes it so expensive. They have had to resort to carrying private insurance so they wouldn’t have a five year waiting period for some ailments.

They say that the European union has made it impossible to make a living because of the immigrants flocking in.
They want to retire in the US.

They would be right.

At least they were able to buy some. Canadians are not allowed to have private health care coverage, so, if we can afford it, we pay cash, in the US. If not, we wait.

Thanks for the info. I do not have time to read everything tonight, and will most likely not respond, because after two days, post are outdated.
