A Wisconsin woman who is suing the dental firm that allegedly paid John Ford kickbacks to obtain a lucrative TennCare contract is seeking more than 22,000 pages of legal documents from the former state senator.
Marie Kasten, whose ex-husband was the head of Doral Dental USA, asked a Shelby County Circuit Court this week to find Ford in contempt for not turning over the documents relating to Ford's dealings with Doral.
Doral won a multi-million-dollar contract to provide dental services to poor children under Tennessee's Medicaid program known as TennCare.
In a six-count federal indictment in Nashville, Ford is accused of concealing $400,000 he received from Doral between 2002 and 2005 and another $400,000 from a second TennCare contractor, OmniCare Health Plan. He also is charged with wire fraud.
The case is set for trial March 4.
Ford was then a state senator and chairman of the Senate General Welfare, Health and Human Services Committee.
He resigned in 2005 after he was indicted in Memphis on bribery charges stemming from the FBI's Tennessee Waltz undercover public corruption investigation.
He was convicted in April and has been sentenced to 51/2 years in prison.
He is scheduled to report Dec. 12 to a federal prison in El Paso, Texas, but has a hearing Nov. 28 to determine whether he can remain free while his case is on appeal.
In Kasten's suit against Doral, she is seeking all documents and correspondence Ford has from Doral since 2001 and more than 22,000 pages of discovery provided to him by the federal government in the kickback case in Nashville.
In an Oct. 23 deposition at the office of Kasten's Memphis attorney, Stuart Breakstone, Ford refused to turn over the material and stood on his Fifth Amendment against self-incrimination. A hearing on the matter is set for later this month.
Kasten said she needs the documents for her suit against Doral Dental in which she accuses her ex-husband and other former owners of hiding company assets.
