Two fences. A court order. More than 200 citations. Rain. Cold. Heckling from football fans. Excruciating boredom. And still, almost a year after they clambered up the oaks and redwoods next to Memorial Stadium, the Berkeley tree-sitters remain undaunted in their perches.
But next week that could change, as UC Berkeley lays the groundwork to extricate the protesters from the grove after the Cal Bears' final home football game of the season and a judge's anticipated ruling on whether the university can proceed with plans to build a sports training center where the trees stand.
"We're doing everything possible to resolve this peacefully, out of concern for the safety of the police officers and people in the trees," said UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof. "We're putting the pieces in place so we can secure the area and end this peacefully."
But removing protesters from trees is an inexact science, according to those with experience in the matter. UC Santa Cruz police had a run-in with supporters of tree-sitters this week that ended in a cloud of pepper spray and batons. Six protesters were arrested, but as of Friday evening four or five tree-sitters remained in the redwoods in protest of the campus' plans to remove trees for a science building.
UC Berkeley does not plan to take that course with its band of tree-sitters, about 20 of whom rotate regularly through half a dozen well-equipped tree houses linked by a web of ropes and pulleys.
"We don't have a specific plan, but we do have an overriding desire to end this peacefully," said Mogulof, "although a lot will depend on how they respond to the judge's decision and whether common sense prevails."
The university intends to end the protest regardless of what Alameda County Superior Court Judge Barbara Miller decides,...

Bet they would come down at the sound and vibration of chain saws laboring against the trunks of those trees.
This will be fun watching Bezerkly granola crunchers trying to remove the tree huggers. Like the French fighting the Swiss.
Pray for W and Our Victorious Troops
Cut off the supply of beer and dope. They'd be down in half a day.
I fixed it for ya. The Swiss are pretty fierce.
yes, i am not sure why they don’t do that. liability issues? if you provide fair warning and you are on private property that should be sufficient. they’ve had 1 years notice, that’s more than sufficient.
i say start chopping away. the problem is that some of these )*@)$*# are so dumb that they would actually go down with the tree and become martyrs to peta (or whoever it is that saves trees)
The radical left has no sense.
Just cut off their supply lines. Works every time. They’ll come down when they are hungry.
Car 54 where are you? Gunther Tuddie and Francis Mauldune.
I do think a mysterious arrival of a swarm of bees would help clear the area if needed.
This is a case where I don’t care for either side.
He died.
“But removing protesters from trees is an inexact science, according to those with experience in the matter.”
Why not ask a squirrel hunter how it’s done?
