Czech military monitored Iranian plane - press

Prague- The Czech military, including the Gripen fighters, on Thursday monitored an Iranian transport plane crossing Czech territory as it was to have radioactive material aboard, according to U.S. sources, the daily Pravo reported.

Czech Defence Ministry spokesman Andrej Cirtek said it was not a traditional escort when soldiers establish a contact with the plane, but only "shadowing."

Pravo writes that the Czech military was on top alert.

U.S. colleagues informed the Czech military intelligence service that there was radioactive material aboard the Iranian plane, Pravo says.

Consequently, the aircraft was constantly watching the plane in Czech airspace.

Czech military intelligence officers also monitored the radio communication of the plane's crew, the paper adds.

Soldiers confirmed to Pravo that they monitored an Iranian plane on Thursday morning, but they had no idea why.

Czech air force commander Ladislav Minarik told the paper that the soldiers knew nothing about the reasons as the whole operation was controlled by the NATO regional command seated in Germany.

VERY odd story. What was this plane? From where did it depart and where did it land?

Um... a key piece off information is missing in the article.

Like - where was the plane going to?

It sounds like it was being handled way up the chain:

Czech air force commander Ladislav Minarik told the paper that the soldiers knew nothing about the reasons as the whole operation was controlled by the NATO regional command seated in Germany.

If it set down in Europe (the urge to say Western Europe is strong, but since Poland and the Czechs, etc. have joined NATO, NATO is a helluva lot bigger than in my day), chances are some NATO folks were waiting and watching and monitoring. NATO has contingency plans for this kind of stuff, and it sounds like they kicked in.

As for the radioactive material--Polonium-210, Uranium, or

Yes, you’re right.

The pilot could have come up with some excuse like “Gee, I had just finished a really fine kolache (or pirogi). My hands were kinda greasy. They slipped on the stick and I accidentally launched a Sidewinder missile. I’m sorry. I’ll try not to do it again”.

A lot of “nastily”’s in there.
And I see Germany is mentioned.
I recall a Czech Freeper, but not his/her handle. Would be nice to get a better translation

Yeah, we did, I think.

But now that see the 2 articles, it looks like they were probably translated ok. Though there may be more in other Czech papers
