Not just differential themselves from each other. Specialization results in gene loss, and thus with each new round of speciation/specialization, the organism has less options than before.

Gould took on the "steady state" folks in biology and provided a better explanation for the fosil record than their own.

There used to be a problem with the "steady state" thesis in geology. Agassiz blew that away. Going further, Alfred Wegener came up with a really radical view of the way the world is structured ~ it's now the standard model.

There is no "steady state".

Ooops, should have read “differentiate”, not “differential”

It's BS, too. Don't know how or what will replace it, but it will slip into history along with phlogiston and the four humors of Galen.

Actually, a purpose for the appendix was announced within the last year or so. Read it in Science News in fact.

Still holding out for the Hollow Earth eh?!

We'll find one some day ~ maybe Mars ~ they found some HOLES into the interior several months ago. We discussed it on FR.

first, you create a chamber with 50 atmospheres pressure. It'll collapse into a crystalline form that looks just like the double-helix of DNA.

You are not seriously suggesting that this structure is 1. life, or 2.contains the same level of encoded infomation we find in DNA, or 3. is DNA?

Aparently you are suggesting that life will then be created by all we have to do is toss in some contaminants, and we can start building DNA.

Is you last name Frankenstein?

No, I'm not suggesting it's life, but one of the big problems has been in figuring out how to start small, with a few chemicals, and build up over time through RNA to DNA ~ kind of a "gradualist" approach to it.

Several months ago some researchers squarshed some water real good and tight and it crystalized into double helix molecules.

Could be life originates in any planet like Earth which once had an enormous methane and hydrogen atmosphere that was blown away by the young Sun.

BTW, Jupiter is like Earth in that regard ~ it' has a rocky core very much like Earth's, and Venus' and Mercury's and Mars'.

The atmosphere at the surface of Jupiter (on the rocky core) is many atmospheres ~ the creation of DNA, and life, could be an ordinary matter that happens second by second all over the place on that planet.

When a problem comes along.
You must whip it.
Before the cream sits out too long.
You must whip it.
When something’s going wrong.
You must whip it.

now whip it.
into shape.
shape it up.
get straight.
go forward.
move ahead.
try to detect it.
it’s not too late.
to whip it.
whip it good

“As buds give rise by growth to fresh buds, and these, if vigorous, branch out and overtop on all sides many a feebler branch, so by generation I believe it has been with the great Tree of Life, which fills with its dead and broken branches the crust of the earth, and covers the surface with its ever branching and beautiful ramifications.” Darwin

Is ‘ever branching and beautiful ramifications’ synonymous with ‘complexity’ or ‘genetical richness’ however it is that you define it (a definition which includes your notion that a bacteria isn’t really less complex than a human)? How can you quantify something in a X vs Y data plot without data when you cannot even define it?

“In the past this information has been suppressed, but now it can be told. Every man, woman, and mutant on this planet shall know the truth about devolution.”

Is it Devo or Dennis Kucinich? :-)

They all devolved from the original created kind.

That's apologetics, not science.

I certainly will love it when science finally confirms that no species came from others. It will take time, and there will be extreme reluctance to it, because it’s what the ID folks have been saying all this time.

We might ask Darwin the same question. The data points are rapidly emerging in support of Devolution. Perhaps you should plot them and post a chart. It will certainly be an improvement over Darwin’s purely HYPOTHETICAL tree of life.

Don't wait up.

Science, over the past couple of hundred years, has been pretty good at showing how things once thought to be supernatural are actually natural occurrences.

Science also has a pretty good track record defending false ideas and scientific fraud, with people wasting their entire careers based on lies, until it is discovered 40, 50 or more years later. Haeckel and his phony embryo drawings for example. This crap still makes it into textbooks.
