From the linked article:
"Aramco is one of the lowest cost producers on the planet. Saudi can produce a barrel for less than $2 and can bring on incremental production capacity ..." There is a saying that one should never get in an argument with somebody who buys ink by the barrel.
Similarly, one should never get in a price war with a nation which can produce oil for $2 per barrel. At some point the people who are investing in alternative energy schemes are going to find themselves producing product which is not price competitive even with vast government subsidies.

I know that this is not market purist, but the availibilty of the supply due to political and religious whims has to be taken into account.
I would rather make Canadians rich, not wahabbists that want to kill us.

Why not? It makes at least as much sense as actually paying people who hate us $100 for a $2 product.

At some point the people who are investing in alternative energy schemes are going to find themselves producing product which is not price competitive even with vast government subsidies. We're already there aren't we ? It's just that nobody will say it. It's the rare article about alternative fuels that even dares to compare prices, and I find those who tout them the most highly generally give you a blank look when asked about comparative costs.
These days are just like the Jimmy Carter debacle days, expect that I'm afraid another Ronald Regan isn't waiting in the wings to bring economic sanity back to the discussion.
