Kansas Winemakers Cry Sour Grapes After Comment (from Gov. Sebelius-D)

It seems as if Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius has ruined any possible shot at a career in comedy. Last Tuesday she was attending a fundraiser in Washington state for fellow Democratic governor, Chris Gregoire. Gregoire praised her state's well-known wines. Sebelius cracked an attempt at a feeble joke when she said, "You should be thankful we don't make wine in Kansas," Sebelius said. "If you ever see Kansas wine, don't drink it."

Obviously, this joke did not set will with Kansas winemakers, and I can certainly understand why. From 49 News:

Holton wine makers Ray and Becky Campbell say they're disappointed by the Governor's comment. The two have produced wine for the last two years and won an award for one of their wines at this year's state fair. They say all Kansas wineries are working hard to promote the industry and build the state's economy. The Campbells say Sebelius' comment won't damage the economy, just pose as a setback for wineries. "I think we were disappointed to know that, that we were the butt of a joke when it's a very serious thing to us," Becky said.

Another winemaker was quoted in an article from LJLWorld.com:

"What it says to grape growers and winemakers in this state is she doesn't recognize the quality of what's here," said Michelle Meyer, co-owner of Holy-Field Vineyard and Winery in Basehor and president of the Kansas Viticulture and Farm Winery Association.

According to a spokesperson for Gov. Sebelius, the remark was taken out of context. She was making the point that while Kansas produces more wheat and planes than Washington, Washington certainly has Kansas beat when it comes to wine production.

Even so, I feel for winemakers in the Sunflower State who are working hard and take great pride in the fruits of their labor. It's a shame that the governor gave the impression that she doesn't support the wine industry in her state.

I know a state employee who “stirs off” a pretty good wine with his grapes.

This carpetbagger is embarrassing.

Our elitist governor thinks that Kansans are all a bunch of rubes. She’s not from around here, you know and she damn sure won’t be around here as soon as her term is up. She will either be a U.S. Senator from Kansas whom we will never see, or she will take a job in the Clinton Administration.

My advice to her: don’t let the door hit you in the A$$ on your way out.

I doubt she even knew there were any winemakers in her state.

I agree. As a Kansan, I’m disappointed with the carpet bagging little witch from Ohio.

What a spin! She is a dumbocrate and didn't even know grapes would grow in Kansas much less could be made into wine. Talk about supporting your state.

Stupid is as stupid does. (democRAT)
Any surprise here folks?
When, oh when will the human capacity for thought process register in the empty skulls that vote for elected political office?
