Dobbs Is Advertising for Himself (Lou Dobbs To Run As An Independent POTUS Candidate)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 15 November 2007 | JOHN FUND

Lou Dobbs for President? Don't laugh. After months of telling reporters that he "absolutely" would not consider leaving his highly-rated CNN show in which he crusades against free trade and illegal immigration, Mr. Dobbs posted a commentary on his Web site last week predicting a surprise new presidential candidate in 2008. The mystery candidate is an "independent populist . . . who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites."

Lou Dobbs Friends of Mr. Dobbs say he is seriously contemplating a race for the first time, although it's still unlikely. They spin a scenario under which the acerbic commentator would parachute into the race if Michael Bloomberg, the New York billionaire and favorite of East Coast elites, enters the field as an independent. With Hillary Clinton continuing to score badly in polls in the categories of honesty and integrity, and with the public's many doubts about Rudy Giuliani and other GOP contenders, Mr. Bloomberg may well see an opportunity to roil the political waters by entering the race late. If so, Mr. Dobbs then sees a niche for a "fourth-party" candidate who could paint the three other contenders as completely out of touch.

His playbook would be similar to that of Ross Perot in 1992, who didn't enter the presidential race until the major parties began holding their primaries but quickly shot up to 25% in many polls.

I hope Lou Dobbs runs. He will keep the two major parties on their toes.

I agree. It would put Hillary in the White House. God help us.

It's the only way Her Thighness can win.

I assumed the splinter candidate would be Ron Paul, given the unaccountably large donations being pumped into his campaign coffers, but an egoist like Dobbs would serve Her purposes just as well.

There are some things I agree with Dobbs about but I don’t know enough about him otherwise to support him. I doubt he’ll make a serious run.

Agreed. No clinton has ever been elected president by a majority of votes cast.

Perot gave us Bill Clinton.

I’d vote for Dobbs over anyone on that stage. Hunter is good, but Lou would get my vote.

Well, if the general election was between Rudy and Hillary then it really wouldn’t matter much if the GOP went down to defeat. And who knows people might actually be disgusted enough that he could win. Any idea what Lou Dobbs position on Abortion is?

Vote for Dobbs - not in a million years. He is so far left Stalin would be proud. The only conservative comment ever issues is immigration and it is one of the few the right/left can agree on. Except for idiots like McCain, Graham, Lott, you know the list.

If Lou Dobbs AND Michael Bloomberg run, everything is up for grabs. And Dobbs would say things that really need to be said.

I agree with most everything Lou has said over the past few years watching him on CNN.

He is very well known, is an excellent speaker, and very passionate and he's not part of the D.C. machine. All these qualities are totally lacking in the all the other candidates, that are also, all part of the machine

Lou runs, he gets my vote, hands down.

The democrats will win seats, mayors etc. especially in the border states where many of the races are razer thin.

Illegals will love the gains they pick up in areas where Dobbs makes a difference.

I've always believed that Dobb's anti-illegal populism is part of an act. He's really more about anti-corporate socialism. He is with the Clinton News Network, after all. Dobbs is the left-wing O'Reilly: he's "lookin' out for the little guy", but in a CNN approved Marxist sort of way (the illegal immigration schtick notwithstanding). The Democrats (e.g. former Carter aide, "Ham" Jordan) have been trying to promote a "middle-ground" third party candidate for some time, Dobbs could be just the ticket.

Dobbs is nothing but a self-promoting doom-and-gloom loudmouth with an ego to match his rotund middle. He is right on some issues, but dead wrong on others. He is a pot-banging populist in the tradition of Pat Buchanan.

The machine would go against Lou in a big way.

He'd get my full support.

Don't quote me on this but I think he supports it, but is from the "safe, legal and rare" clinton school.

He appears to be somewhat socially moderate (i.e. liberal) with a streak of indifference.

I agree with you. Lou Dobbs is a total fraud. He claims to be anti-illegal but he didn’t give the Republicans any credit for stopping the immigration bill.

He is a straw man who is trying to get Hillary Clinton into the White House.

Anyone who would fall for his act is an idiot.
