“I think they would be consistent w/ your own but perhaps slightly closer to those that might be attributable to how Attila the Hun would think wrt/
this issue.”

Fair enough, but the Brits are good guys and have given you no cause to be rude or obnoxius.

“...don’t take kindly to your vernacular.”

You mean.... they don’t take kindly to my view.

Now for a serious question.

The Anglians’ nick name is “The Poachers”. Is there a story behind this?

well said mate. for all US Freepers here:

we get our backs up when some fool like MV gets on his soap box, but just to clarify we are all Atlanticists, and have nothing but respect for the US and hope the friendship between our two cultures continues until the sun burns out!

You are a jerk on a thread that is to praise our allies in the WOT.

If you don’t have anything good to say, go away from this thread and start your own rant somewhere else.

Wait! Have I been rude or obnoxious? Or have I expressed
my view w/ support keeping the conversation on a civil keel?
I have used humor and I would expect persons of this thread
to be able to discern that.

My initial comment said that it is hard to keep track of the
British defeats since 1776. And based on the encyclopedicc history,
or the link thereto, I posted earlier, the comment was absolutely accurate.
Then people started accusing me of denigrating Brit mil history.
I never did. I supported my statement above.

Can I just support Rikstir here in saying that I have nothing but respect for the US and hope that the ‘special relationship’ long continues!

Thanks for the back-up from US freepers in this thread too.

Winston Churchill was easily the greatest man of the 20th Century. Had Roosevelt and Truman listened to Churchill, Mac Arthur and Patton, the second hald of the 20th Century would have been a much better world.

Good question! I’ve just manage to find this paragraph about the Regiment’s nicknames from the Royal Anglian Museum Website:

“Nicknames

The 1st Battalion is nicknamed “The Vikings” after the influence of the Nordic Warriors on the Eastern part of the Regimental area. The 2nd Battalion’s nickname, “The Poachers” is inherited from the nickname of one of their forbears, The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment who adopted the name from the title of their Regimental march, The Lincolnshire Poacher. The 3rd Battalion was known as ‘’The Pompadours’’, the nickname given to the 56 Foot who adopted ‘Pompadour Purple’ as their facing colour. Before its disbandment, the 7th (Volunteer) Battalion was known as “The Tigers” the nickname of their predecessor, The Royal Leicestershire Regiment.”

http://www.royalanglianmuseum.org.uk/tour6.html

I imagine te Regiment will have inherited many traditions from amalgamated forebears. The website looks to have some very interesting history, including notes on standards captured from the French in 1812 and the Battle of Minden in 1759.

I was imagining that it had originated from an ancient encounter with one of the King’s deer, or perhaps one of his daughters.

Men of Valor Part II
First Mission

[Inside Basra Palace: Telic 9]

To interpret events in al Basra, context is critical. When we invited the British to join us in this war in 2003, the U.S., with the bulk of troops and assets, was the senior partner. In essence, we were the driver of a bus filled with several dozen partners: Poland, Australia, Japan, Georgia, Korea, Albania and so on. Although several key countries had opted to stay home, no nation stepped up to the task like Great Britain, taking responsibility for southern Iraq. But they could not have not planned for the seemingly precipitous and arbitrary decisions made by the mostly American bus drivers in Washington and Baghdad, who took many turns without consulting an accurate map. Egos and strained competencies only magnified and compounded errors. Nobody paid more for these mistakes than Iraqis and Americans, but the Brits and others have also paid tolls for their seats.......

Thanks for the link. I think that Mr. Yon writes very well: he puts the UK media (who have barely set foot in Basra since the initial phase of the war) to shame
