I think that even here in the USA that gun ownership has caused restraint on the government.

Think of the 90s, there was a little effort by the government to over assert themselves and it resulted in many deaths that caused bad publicity and led to the government restraining itself.

Anti-gun people mock the idea that armed civilians can defeat the government and I don’t disagree with them.

I make two points, one is that if we are armed to the teeth then it isn’t just a matter of our sons in the military performing their duty to impose order.

If we are armed then they have to kill us by the thousands and that is a whole different hurdle for a demigod to sell to our own uniformed children.

The second point is that while imposing a new order would be difficult enough in America, it would be hugely more difficult politically if the body count climbed into the countless thousands due to armed resistance.

I think that even liberals understand these arguments.

That’s making an assumption that there would be enough people with guns who would kill people with them. I don’t think there would be enough to save us from anything.

My opinion on the thought that armed citizens could not defeat an out of control government is:
It would not be “all of us against all of them” We would call our sons an daughters home from the military.
Police officers would be split, some of them come from gun owning families.
Who HAS the most guns?
I once read somewhere that only 5% of the populace was active in the American revolution. Once the line in the sand is drawn and crossed,It could be quite amazing what an armed populace could do.
Covert, guerrilla style operations, with random assassinations of opposition leaders,
Lots of spies and inside agents
Thats how our own CIA operates,They have had some success.
I hope our nation is a really long way from that situation, I have no doubt that someday the Tree must be watered or it will die, I sort of hope I’m through living my life before it becomes necessary.
