Then don't take your kids to see it. Easy enough. If mine want to see it, we will. Then we'll discuss what they thought of it. I'll use it as an educational opportunity.

It's what a responsible parent would do...

I’m guessing you’re a little fuzzy on the values being taught by Hollywood vs Religion these days.

If I may spam some verses from a random internet google that I did on the subject of Christian entertainment:

Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit (2 Corinthians 7:1).

James 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-—his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2).

Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you (2 Corinthians 6:17).

Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:19-20).

Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul (1 Peter 2:11).

The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever (1 John 2:17).

Would you use that same apporach for an S&M porn movie?

“Our kids are big LOTR and Narnia fans so hopefully we can avoid
the previews.”

The previews/trailers for “The Golden Compass” might be a good
“teachable moment”.
From what little I’ve seen, it looks like “The Golden Compass” is
just work of a faker (director) hoping to hitch his DERIVATIVE
work to the tail of Narnia.

And hoping that will get them plenty of $$$ at the box office.

I've read the first two books and half of the third. Pullman is selling poisoned candy, marketed to children and pre-teens.

The message of the books is that God is actually a petty, jealous Power who is deliberately stunting the potential of Man, so that he can remain an uber-dictator for eternity. The only solution is to rebel against God and kill him, thus freeing the omnipotence of Man to do whatever he wants.

“The same can not be said for impressionable children.”

Then you would also agree that children should not be exposed to any religious belief system, right ? If they are too impressionable to rationally evaluate the ideas in a film, then they should have been kept away from Narnia and other pro-Christian kid’s movies.

“Then don’t take your kids to see it.”

I’m more concerned about it’s impact on children in general. It’s a slickly packaged dose of God-hatred designed for the impressionable.

Well, my children are secure enough that a movie will not send them down the dark road.

How old are they? The forces of evil are relentless and all they want is just a little crack to gain a little foothold of doubt and then expand on it. Once the stage is set, a little wider crack might appear.

If I leave my house unlocked, it is unlikely that I'll get ripped off, but it would still be irresponsible for me to do it.

God Bless you and the children God gave you to nurture and protect.

What could? (Hint: Don't say "nothing.")

I was speaking about this Golden Compass movie and Religions that personify a God.

In the Golden Compass, everyone has a spirit animal they can talk to and that accompanies them everywhere.

In religions like Christianity, everyone is also taught that there is an entity that accompanies them everywhere and that they can talk to.

Red herring. Don't go there.

No, I do not agree.

I am not neutral, nor will I pretend to be. I am pro Christian and believe that children should be expose to Christ and the Bible from the earliest possible age.

Agreed.

I wonder why any “responsible parent” would fund such a thing. “My kids faith can handle....I’ll use it to educate....” I wonder if these same excuses were used to give money to Al Gore and Michael Moore’s movies. Sure, you probably can handle it and educate about it but why pay for it?

Use it as an opportunity to proselytize. Use your example to correct the record.

One of the problems today is that everyone is so danged worried about what everyone else is doing that they may not like. Worry about your own kids first.

We keep praying, "... and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil" and yet, IMHO, we are deliberately going to do that if we go to see the movie. It is based on books intentionally (by the author's admission, and he did it openly) written to offend and undermine Christian faith. To me, it's like deliberately spending money on watching a movie based on Osama Bin Laden's book on 'death to America!' No thanks, I prefer to spend my hard-earned money on something else.

That’s pretty accurate. I read all three books just a few years ago.

I take it you don’t think this is an idea worth exploring with your kids ? If they are not exposed to differing opinions, they will never be able to debate their beliefs based on the merits. They will have only dogma to rely on.
