JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 19 -- The United Nations' top AIDS scientists plan to acknowledge this week that they have long overestimated both the size and the course of the epidemic, which they now believe has been slowing for nearly a decade, according to U.N. documents prepared for the announcement.

AIDS remains a devastating public health crisis in the most heavily affected areas of sub-Saharan Africa. But the far-reaching revisions amount to at least a partial acknowledgment of criticisms long leveled by outside researchers who disputed the U.N. portrayal of an ever-expanding global epidemic.

The latest estimates, due to be released publicly Tuesday, put the number of annual new HIV infections at 2.5 million, a cut of more than 40 percent from last year's estimate, documents show. The worldwide total of people infected with HIV -- estimated a year ago at nearly 40 million and rising -- now will be reported as 33 million.

The United Nations' AIDS agency, known as UNAIDS and led by Belgian scientist Peter Piot since its founding in 1995, has been a major advocate for increasing spending to combat the epidemic. Over the past decade, global spending on AIDS has grown by a factor of 30, reaching as much as $10 billion a year.

After the U.N. and many other folks beat us over the head with the 'Guilty Stick' we promised a ton of money to Africa.
I'm sure tens of billions have already made it's way to Africa.  Now this report surfaces.

I will say it again.  We are the biggest suckers on the face of planet earth.  And Mr. Bono, F U and the sow you road in on.

Bush proposes to double initial promise of $15 billion and add an additional $30 billion dollars in support.

If Congress approves, in ten years, the U.S. people will have given $48 billion to fight AIDS in Africa.

What do you mean, “like they can be trusted”? Our leaders fall for their subtrifuge nine times out of ten. Somebody is sure as hell trusting them.

I hear what you’re implying, but it’s more important some folks at the top pull their heads out.

See, this is something I don't get. If 99 people say one thing, and 1 person says another, that one person will get a disproportionate amount of attention just because he's not going along with the status quo.

In Duesberg's case, his theories were completely discredited 15 years ago, yet there's still a bunch of die hards who seem to latch on to him for the sole reason that he's a "maverick." You see the same thing with fans of Lysenko, Lamarck, John McCain, etc.

I honestly don't get it.

Ann Coulter has been saying this for three books! The UN is using false information to extort money from wealthy countries. The Dems keep saying the money spent on the war should be spent here (stupid argument). When are the Republicans going to start saying the money spent on the UN could be better spent?

it appears to me the peer review system is designed to discredit any theory that threatens the establishment.

Of course, they'll eventually admit the same problems overestimating man-made global warming. In about ten years. And trillions spent reversing progress.

Nah, I caught that gig in the ‘70s. But it will definitely be something cataclysmic with annoying consequences, like total ocean evaporation where we’re allowed to flush toilets only once a day.

I've followed Duesberg's writings for well over 15 years and I've not seen nothing that would discredit his views. Can you point to anything except a Gore-like "scientific consensus" that would prove Duesberg to be incorrect. His predictions about the course of AIDS have been better that the UN's.

Really? And we are supposed to believe them on this global warming baloney. Correction: “climate change”, the new improved alarmist buzz word.
