THE Coalition's election hopes have been bolstered by a poll putting it closer to Labor than any time during the election campaign.
The Galaxy poll reportedly has Labor with a primary vote of 52 per cent and the Coalition with 48 per cent. ... Liberal sources insist that the electorate’s mood is more uneven than the headline polls have indicated until now and that the election is closer than thought.
John Howard told the National Press Club today that he still believed the Coalition could win, and then promptly jumped onto a plane to blitz marginal seats in Queensland.
Kevin Rudd has been equally cautious, warning his troops that 16 seats for victory were considerable hurdle.
Despite the warnings Labor has been preparing to take government including detailed discussion with departments about what would happen in the coming weeks.
Earlier, Mr Howard said he has a more coherent and detailed plan for the future which stands in contrast to the Labor's unconvincing case for change.
Addressing the National Press Club, Mr Howard said the Coalition had proven record of economic reform and had built a more secure and more optimistic nation.
He said he was proud that real funding of the defence forces had risen 47 per cent while relations with Indonesia and China have improved.
Mr Howard said the extent of the nation’s self confidence was the end of the tortuous debate about national identity, Australia’s place in the world and the constrictions of political correctness.
Instead Australians now felt "gloriously and distinctively Australian’’. ... Labor had avoided producing detail, witness by their refusal to submit policies to the bureaucracy in time for them to be assessed.

I just wish Australia cut taxes sooner instead of paying off so much debt that there was the possibility there would be no bond market.
The leftist Labour candidate, Mr. Rudd, began to hemorrhage politically after Mr. Howard’s Liberal Party released the footage showing Mr.Rudd sitting in Parliament picking his earwax and eating it.
This grossed out most Australians even those in the farleft precincts.

From what I understand, if Howard can close another point or two in 2PP, he just might pull it off. I’ll be watching.

I try to follow Aussie politics and brush by the Australian from time to time...but I obviously missed this one!! (chortles!)
Yep - one of the polls today puts Rudd at 52 to Howards 48 on two party preferred. That’s right on the border Labor needs to win - 52.1% is the theoretical magic number.
Of course, the other poll has Rudd-Howard at 55-45.
What we can say at this point, about 25 hours before polls open, is that we’re in the ballpark. It’s winnable.
Unfortunately, in the last day or so, some idiot connected to the Liberal Party was caught handing out fake Labor party pamphlets, and that could hurt us. We don’t need this type of behaviour going on.
Even so, the trend looks somewhat favorable for the Coalition, unlike earlier polls which had the ALP at 57.
Howard’s going to lose seats I suspect, but hopefully he can hang on to enough of the marginals and get the job done. Also, hopefully, Howard will be re-elected in Bennelong.

This is all the rage in Australia right now. I think it’s going to cost Labour the election, in my humble opinion.
