'We have a moral responsibility as a country'
On the eve of Thanksgiving, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards unveiled a plan to help feed Americans who cannot afford to buy food.
In a phone call with reporters, the former North Carolina senator said 35.5 million Americans went hungry last year, including 13 million children. "We have a moral responsibility as a country," to make sure no one goes hungry in America.
He offered six ideas to help combat hunger:
Implement the Farm Bill -- which Republicans filibustered -- because it contains a food stamp program and emergency help for food banks.
Enroll more families in the food stamp program and expand eligibility.
. Fund programs to feed low-income kids at school.
Strengthen food programs for seniors, such as Meals-on-Wheels.
Provide low- or no interest loans to weatherize homes and provide help paying for high heating bills.
Lure supermarkets into neighborhoods that don't have them.
Hire Pinkerton guards to beat back the thugs who would rob the lured supermarkets...
Edwards Plan to Feed Hungry:
Bring Edwards all the fish, and all the loaves...
“Lure supermarkets into neighborhoods that don’t have them”
How can we lure real Conservatives back into politics?
How about feeding them in your 28K sq ft home.
We’re having difficulty luring conservatives to become GOP candidates.
How about a big barbecue at the ole homestead? Oh, I forgot, Libby doesn't like for her kids to be exposed to the "common folks".
Why doesnt Edwards use HIS money instead of ours?
Let them eat cake?
Hey John, all of those are existing Democrat created programs. Are you admitting that these programs have been failures?
My simple solution: Feed the obese to the starving.
American’s definition of hunger is going more than 5 hours without eating. John Edwards proposal might cut an hour off that time.
WOW! He is such a humanitarian....And he he plans to do it the good old guvmint way. Take it from you and I. I would dearly like to know how much of his own bottom feeder lawyer fortune who would part with to accomplish it.
No, I’m thinking more along the lines of spit-roasted Michael Moore.
“who “
“he” LOL!
Of the 35.5 million Edwards claims is going hungry 30 million are people on various diets. I’m one of those...
“Fund programs to feed low-income kids at school.”
This is actually a problem. I was speaking to an educator who is an MD and in our conversation he said that many learning disabilities and problems in school were due to kids coming to school hungry and not being able to focus on learning.
Before anyone hammers me on this, the MD was a prominent member of a church and his church would set up tables outside of schools and provide high protein snacks to students. In the course of a school year, they noticed that the grades went up and students were more attentative.
When I was a kid, we would have milk and a snack every day in school. I believe it was like 5 cents a week. I also remember that getting cut from the budget because teachers were more concerned with getting paid for sick time they didn’t use then for kids eating.
How about providing conditions so that people who build supermarkets would want to go into neighborhoods where there are none. Stop treating them like 'interlopers'.
I have to laugh at this. Many years back, a supermarket chain was lured into a ghetto-like area here in Indy.
The store pulled out of that area about a year later because people were stealing them blind.
The store complained that most of the time the food was stolen before ever hitting the store shelves.
No business in their right mind would ever try it again.
Maybe Silky could use some of his funds to give it a try!
How many poor, hungry and homeless is Mr. John having over to his estate for Thanksgiving, or any time for that matter. Oh, perhaps the rest of us are supposed to be doing that under his talented leadership (Not).
