Al Qaeda has to attack the home-grown movements in Iraq for that leaves no space for them to create more violence and unrest. AQ thrives on the kinds of conditions the Democrats find so congenial. A stable Iraq is not a welcoming environment for them.

"A stable Iraq is not a welcoming environment for them."

IMHO what has now happened is much bigger than that, even according to their own pronouncements, i.e. Iraq being the central front.

If AQ has been REJECTED, in this case violently, by even the less secular Sunni of Iraq, what message does that send to the rest of the Sunni world about AQ? They may be saying, "The AQ attack on the US was ok, but that doesn't mean I want AQ controlling how I live". Look at what the Sunni in Iraq think of them."

If that is happening then history may record "The Surge" as the turning point in NOT ONLY IRAQ BUT THE WAR AGAINST MUSLIM EXTREMISM. And if that is true, then George Bush will be seen by history as a very important and successful President; something the Dems fear even more than a Muslim extremist victory.
