Was at my brothers place and his canned goods, frozen crop and salted crops would make mylocal grocery store look empty. Gave me 45 lbs of sauerkraught ‘cause he didn’t have room for it. Think I’ll give 1/2 to my boss because he’s so full of shit.

Yup.

One square yard of ground and you can grow enough lettuce to choke a goat.

It’s a freakin weed already!!

Good point! What do they think all that soil is for? Mud pies?

During WWII we lived in the city and had a victory garden and a grape arbor. I live in the city now and have a garden, fruit trees and a raspberry patch. There is no excuse not to be able to grow your own veggies if you have a city lot. In fact, not far from me there is a communal garden for apartment dwellers. Or drive out to the country to pick and pay.

There is no excuse for empty shelves, and laziness is not an excuse!

“Rural Americans used to have G A R D E N S”

That is the truth, now gardens are more of hobby or “What Granny used to grow”.

I’ve lived in the Boonies, and their thrust is correct, there are very few Supermarkets and many times the local store has to be the Grocery.

But then again, a piece of paper, a pen, and writing down “beans, carrots, potatoes, salad greens, tomatoes” for the next trip to the store helps out a lot.

OT, but many people may not realize that Food Stamps can be used to buy seed to grow ones own food...that’s a thought..

Rural Americans still do have gardens.

They’re not the ones that are *too poor* to eat right.

Funny thing is, all the welfare types I lived near could afford take-out (delivered), cigarettes, booze, drugs, pets, computers, big screen TVs, rent-a-whatever, but were always on the verge of starvation. (Right. Not judging by their weight, they weren’t)

Nor does it explain why I saw people buying expensive steaks, lobster, shrimp, etc with food stamps.

If the government wants them to eat better, then they need to hand our coupons for fruits and veggies, specifically. That is if the govt. is going to hand out anything, which I don’t think they should. Hunger is a great motivator for working.....

I lived in rural Mississippi before moving to New Mexico. Almost everyone had a garden, even in the upscale subdivisions. The exception was the real white trash, the dopers and pot-heads. They would run from a hoe like the devil from holy water.
