I wholeheartedly believe that it is not about offense, defense or special teams. It is about character. The foundation of the Nebraska program under Osborne was built on character. That is the spirit that the Nebraska program needs to recapture. I believe Nebraska had something different, something more special than any other program in the country. Osborne not only preached character, but he lived it and the players eventually learned from it.

I have problems equating coach Osborne and character building. I seem to remember a running back named Phillips who liked to beat-up the coeds. Osborne coddled him time and time again. Phillips played at the next level, but got into trouble everywhere he played.

If my memory serves me right, Phillips is doing time now. There were others similar to this, but I can’t remember them now.
