Read The Coming Generational Storm by Lawrence Kotlikoff. Some of the challenges are economic, some are social. Within his tome he makes a point regarding grandparents. In previous years then tended to stick near the children and help out. In may cases now, they run away and have nothing to do with their children or grandchildren. I am fortunate to come from a family where that is not the case but many people are not so fortunate.

And as parents have children later in life, grandparents may be too infirmed (or deceased) to help out with the grandkids in any substantive way.

That's the case with my family situation. I'm working part-time at home, while raising a 3 year-old and keeping an eye on my Mother, whose health took a turn for the worse this year. My father passed away 7 years ago, and my wife's parents are in poor health.
