after an Asian officer complained In Britain, "Asian" signifies Middle Eastern, not Southeast Asian. They'd use the term "Oriental" for someone we'd call "Asian". I'm thinking the complainer was not a white Amish guy.

No it doesn’t it generally denotes South Asian descent - Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi etc descent. Not Middle Eastern.
