Those darn German-Americans who developed the atomic bomb that won WWII and those darn Mexican-Americans who join the military before they gain citizenship are ruining this country![/s]
I see no problem with “hyphenated Americans” as long as their allegiance is to America above all; however, to pledge this allegiance does not necessitate removing the hyphen.
That’s the whole premise behind what Teddy said. There is only American nothing else.
If their allegiance is to America then dropping the hyphen and becoming full Americans should be no problem.
