WASHINGTON - A Tampa Bay area congresswoman wants to deny some federal funding to localities that have what she describes as "sanctuary" policies for illegal immigrants.
Under a bill that Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite will introduce this week, states and localities with policies that ban cooperation with federal officials in apprehending or removing undocumented immigrants from the country would lose federal funding that helps them pay for jailing noncitizens who commit crimes.
The Brooksville Republican says she continues to explore the idea of revoking other federal payments. She wrote Thursday to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff asking what added authority, if any, he needs to compel localities to better cooperate with federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws.
"Sanctuary cities are an insult to law-abiding citizens," Brown-Waite said during a hearing Wednesday in which she pressed Chertoff about cutting federal aid to these cities.
New Haven, Conn., is such a city. It has a a general order to "ignore" federal immigration and customs warrants...
Under Brown-Waite's bill - which also would seek to make illegal immigration a felony - a state or municipality could be targeted if it has in place "a statute, policy or practice" that prevents law enforcement from cooperating with federal officials regarding illegal immigrants apprehended "in the course of routine duties."
Funding revocation would kick in if those policies continue six months after Brown-Waite's bill became law.

why wait 6 months?
Right. It can’t be retro-active but it can begin the same day as passed for current violations. Give them 30 days to become law abiding cities for past indiscretions.
But “I’m not aware of any city - although I may be wrong - that actually interferes with our ability to enforce the law,” Chertoff said.

Wasn’t this issue covered in the imigration act of 1994 regarding sanctuary cities? If so, wouldn’t federal funding already have grounds for immediate revocation?
(This was a subject covered a few months ago on the Victoria Taft radio show in Portland when the city decided to take tax revenue to build a shelter for illegals to gather in order to find work.)
If we had a just world, the mayors and council members who voted for those laws would be charged with treason and hung.
Did you notice how many of them are college towns? Austin, Madison, Fairbanks, the insufferable Cambridge, etc.
The feds should cut their federal money to these cities.
(a) Criminal penalties (1) (A) Any person whoArrest each person voting for a sanctuary measure and put him on trial with charges that would likely put him away for life, and you will see the end of the sanctuary movement[...]
(iii) knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation; [...]
(B) A person who violates subparagraph (A) shall, for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs [list of fines and terms of imprisonment up tp 20 years, per alien]
typo above: US Code, not UN Code
How about a sanctuary State, like ours? The attitude of the state government is to to do nothing at all to harm illegals and everything they can to aid them, including granting these law-breakers drivers licenses and many other bennies. This lax attitude has spread to county and city governments and we see no hope they will change. We just ran a close election with three candidates against illegal immigration and three lukewarm and non-committal about it. The lukewarmers all won with major $$$ help of the building trades and Chamber of Commerce. It’s discouraging at best.

This would be interesting - 8 of the 10 largest cities are “sanctuaries” with all 8 having Democratic majorities.

The Chamber of Commerce is worse than the friggin Nazi’s!!
And some wonder why the DUmmies are in favor of illegals voting, getting driver’s licenses, and...
