Aloha Lauren!

Well.....just watched Sgt. Bilko. Something I probably watched before since it was one of my father's favorite shows. He had three favorites.....but back then I think there were only three shows available.

Um, wasn’t “Some Like it Hot” released ‘60 or ‘61? Not quite a “’50s” movie.

I have a friend named Norton who actually is a plumber! LOL! The Honeymooners references go over his head most of the time, though. LOL!

This Day in U.S. Military History July 3

1863 - Troops under Confederate General George Pickett begin a massive attack against the center of the Union lines at Gettysburg on the climactic third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the largest engagement of the war.

General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia encountered George Meade's Army of the Potomac in Pennsylvania and battered the Yankees for two days. The day before Pickett's charge, the Confederates had hammered each flank of the Union line but could not break through. Now, on July 3, Lee decided to attack the Union center, stationed on Cemetery Ridge, after making another unsuccessful attempt on the Union right flank at Culp's Hill in the morning. The majority of the force consisted of Pickett's division, but there were other units represented among the 15,000 attackers. After a long Confederate artillery bombardment, the Rebel force moved through the open field and up the slight rise of Cemetery Ridge. But by the time they reached the Union line, the attack had been broken into many small units, and they were unable to penetrate the Yankee center. The failed attack effectively ended the battle of Gettysburg. On July 4, Lee began to withdraw his forces to Virginia. The casualties for both armies were staggering. Lee lost 28,000 of his 75,000 soldiers, and Union losses stood at over 22,000. It was the last time Lee threatened Northern territory.

Good morning, Everyone. Good morning

Thank you, Lauren, for preparing the Canteen for today’s activities. MY favorite(s) of this group? Martin & Lewis and Lucy, absolutely!

DC Metroland weather report
Today....Partly cloudy. High 57F. Winds WNW at 10 to 20 mph.
~ Tonight....Mainly clear skies. Low 34F. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph.

Sad news in the sports world......MIAMI — Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died early Tuesday, a day after he was shot at home. He was 24.

Prayers for his family. And, prayers that his killer is caught, quickly.

Time for me to make my rounds. But, you stay right where you are. Don't touch that dial. Don't change that channel. Put down that remote. Don't leave the room. Keep your eyes on your monitor. Cause...............I'll be bock!

Now remember, the Canteen is OPEN

So, come on in and sit for a while. There's always plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS

REMEMBER THEM

DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above Honoring those who have served before.

Here are some of my favorite lines from early sitcoms:

Wally to Eddie Haskell: "Maybe that's why you're such a miserable creep."

Wally to Eddie as they passed through the kitchen: "Hey, want a hunka milk?"

Jed Clampett to visitor: "The best thing about possum innards is they is ju-u-u-u-st as good the second day!"

Barney Fife to prisoners: "Welcome to the Rock!"

Good morning, Canteeners, Cubies, Newbies & Troops! Enjoyed the mud bowl in Pittsburgh last night, thankfully the Steelers won (an ugly win by the Steelers beats an ugly loss by the Ravens). My favorite 50’s comedian was definitely Jackie Gleason in “The Honeymooners.” I can’t imagine a comedy being aired today where Ralph threatens to deck Alice (”Bang, zoom”.....”To the moon, Alice; to the mooooon!”); but on the other hand, we can have comedies about any kind of sexual activity or about moronic parents today. Have a fine day, all!

Thanks to Susan from Toronto for this little gem...

Top this for a speeding ticket...

Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road.

One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300 mph!  Their radar then suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

Just then, a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had, in fact, latched on to an RAF's 'Tornado' jet fighter, which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district, approaching from the North Sea.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint about the wrecked radar equipment to the "RAF Liaison" office.

Back came the reply in true laconic "RAF" style:

"Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto, your radar equipment, and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it.  Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft also automatically locked onto your equipment.  Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognized the situation,  and was able to override the automated defence system before the missile was launched.

Have a good day."
