Senate Republicans oust Stosch In leadership shuffle, Norment is new head of chamber's caucus

In what appeared to be a peaceful coup, Republican senators shoved aside their leader, Sen. Walter A. Stosch of Henrico County, yesterday and elected two conservative senators to new leadership positions.

Stosch was made Republican leader emeritus, a new position. Sen. Thomas K. Norment Jr. of James City County, who had been floor leader, will now be the leader.

Conservative Republican senators had been pushing for a leadership change after the loss of the party's majority in the state Senate in the Nov. 6 election.

Sen. Stephen D. Newman of Lynchburg, who had been a leader of conservatives seeking a change, was elected caucus chairman, a position previously held by Sen. Martin E. Williams of Newport News. Williams was defeated for re-election in a primary.

Another conservative, Sen. Mark D. Obenshain of Harrisonburg, was made a whip along with Sen. Frank W. Wagner of Virginia Beach. Sen. Kenneth W. Stolle of Virginia Beach will be Republican leader pro tempore, a new post.

I hope this means Stosch is on his way out.

Richmond ping.

I hope this means conservatives hold the line in the General Assembly instead of caving in to Governor Gridlock.

I’m not sure how much of an improvement Norment will be. But it’s good that Stosch is out. Hopefully this means he’ll retire next time around.

The headline should have been amended to point out this a state tussel, rather national. There are those out there that are new to politics that might not know all the players.

From your keyboard to God’s ears - he should have retired this year.

I guess I have to start the drumbeat “Not one more nickel. Not one more nickel. Not one more nickel.....”

Why would anyone check under Virginia? This was a general thread, right? Not a specific. Thanks anyway.

Thank you very much for the good news ping, although it looks like they had to do a lot of pacifying (all those new titles) in order to git ‘er done. I’m also thinking those Senators being moved aside have some might big war chests yet.
