The Arkansas Encylopedia describes his tenure as such: “During his ten years in office, the Republican Party GAINED substantial strength in the state and candidates were fielded in most statewide races. Huckabee’s overall popularity helped make the environment favorable for Arkansas to become one of the last Southern states to become a competitive two-party system at the state level”
