The traditional Nielsen ratings model doesn't really translate well to cable news. The ratings measure the average number of people who are watching for at any point in the hour, but a lot of folks pop into the news nets for a quick update and then move on to something else. The ratings don't accurately reflect the number of people who watch in short bursts.
