Bush to Dems: Approve Iraq war funding before Christmas (Pentagon planning layoffs)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush sternly called on Democrats to approve money to fund the Iraq war "without strings and without delay" before leaving town for the Christmas holidays, something congressional leaders have already indicated they will not do.

After more failed attempts to pass legislation ordering troops home from Iraq, Democrats have said they plan to sit on Bush's $196 billion request for war spending until next year.

Bush said this will push the Pentagon toward an accounting nightmare and affect the military's ability to do its job protecting the country.

-snip-

With such legislation failing to secure enough votes, Democratic leaders say they won't send the president a war spending bill this year at all.

In response, Pentagon officials began saying that the military will have to take drastic steps next month if it doesn't get the money soon. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has ordered the Army and Marine Corps to begin planning for a series of expected cutbacks, including civilian layoffs, termination of contracts and reduced operations at bases.

Democrats and the Pentagon agree the military has until about March before it runs out of money.

"Congress limits how much money can be moved from one account to the other," Bush said. "Secretary Gates has already notified Congress that he will transfer money from accounts to fund other activities of the military services to pay for current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan -- and no more money can be moved."

Treason. Pure and simple. The democrats don’t understand patriotism or survival. They have tied themselves to a suicidal policy that is aimed at defeating the US Armed Forces goals in the GWOT. They need to be called to account, and our Republican leaders need to start calling it what it is.....Treason.

That’s what the DOD should do — suspend payments to DOD contractors in districts voting against the funding. Our guys need supplies now; the newfangled hardware can wait a few months.

Don’t need a natural disaster, just some testicular fortitude.

As Chief Executive he should make an executive decision and declare a budget emergency. Then transfer money from non-constitutional departments - education and human services, for example - and fund the Defense budget. Layoff people whose jobs have NOTHING to do with a constitutionally required government function.

By the time the screaming and yelling and lawsuits get started the whole show will be over. And the President will have made a very sharp point.

But don’t expect Bush to pull it off.

It takes courage to go after what one really wants and know what is really right and honorable.

Sell War bonds in a coast to coast campaign!! Get Hannity and Rush to headline the events and to show that the public supports our troops and that the DemocRATS are soft on national defense, soft on terror and soft on America.

The DemocRATS are the party of NO. No oil drilling, no smokes, no trans fats, no to school choice - they are the most negative people in the world. We can win in Iraq not only a military victory but turn them into an Arab Korea. That will shut up the media and the RATS.

Since my job could be one of those layoffs, let me be the first to say LAY ME OFF

The only problem with this solution is the Bush administrations inability to communicate to the American public that it is the Congress's fault. They will somehow turn it around to blaming the Republicans, and he will let them get away with it, like the SCHIP debate.

I love President Bush as much (or more it sometimes seems) as anyone here, but that man really needs to get out in front of this kind of stuff. Go on national TV, during prime time, like Reagan used to do, and say "The Democratic led Congress is holding up our military and DOD funding forcing us to lay off non essential workers, and contractors" (even though I could prove that our contractor production makes money for the DOD through thorough, and complete work done in a timely manner).

What an awesome idea, I'd buy one in a second! This would totally embarrass the dems. Could you imagine ordinary people stepping up to supply our troops with the fuel and ammunition they need to win this war? When the dems cave, and they will, all moneys raised could go to the families of deceased veterans instead.

The wisest move Al Qaeda made on Sept. 11, 2001 was not crashing a plane into the Capitol building.

I don’t think they had a choice in the matter, thanks to Todd Beamer and the brave men and women of United 93.
