THE United States and the EU on Thursday urged Russia to not to go ahead with a threat to stop complying with a key European arms control treaty next month at an annual OSCE meeting in Spain.

"We don't believe any country should walk out of a major landmark arms control treaty unilaterally as Russia intends to do," US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Nicholas Burns said.

Moscow announced earlier this year that it would stop implementing the 1990 Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty as of December 12. The treaty limits the deployment of tanks, aircraft and other heavy weapons across the continent.

If arms treaties mean nothing, start putting nuclear-bomb-propelled ships in space.

Prat. That's the type of thing you only say if yopu know your own country has never turned its back on a major arms treaty. And America has.

If you want the Russians to change their minds on a col, rational decision they think suits their best interests, find a way to convince them otherwise, using either carrot or stick. Don't appeal to lofty principles which ring false.

It may not have been ratified but western forces remain well below the CFE parameters. This so-called useless treaty which was implemented unilaterally by Russia was a clear signal to NATO that Russia was no longer interested in entertaining the west with continued cold war tactics and troop movements. Now that Russia wants out of CFE and has reimplemented strategic patrols about the Arctic, its a clear signal and no surprise that the cold war was only an intermission.
