The Maginot Line doesn't always hold
The Washington Times ^ | November 30, 2007 | Wesley Pruden

Posted on 11/30/2007 5:23:30 AM PST by vietvet67

There's a whiff of something like panic among the pollsters, consultants, acolytes and other ladies in waiting in the court of Hillary Clinton.

The one-time Lady Macbeth of Little Rock — before she scraped the Arkansas buckshot mud off her sturdy matronly pumps and became a New Yorker — looked invincible at Halloween and for a few weeks afterward but suddenly her campaign plane over Iowa looks a little like a broom and a prayer.

Some polls there put her running behind Barack Obama, with John Edwards trailing not far behind. The trouble she made for herself a month ago, with garbled answers to a simple question about driver's licenses for illegal aliens, continues with yarns about dirt on Mr. Obama that she's saving for a later kill. Now there's a new controversy over the suspicion, utterly believable, that her campaign connived with CNN to plant questions meant to sabotage Wednesday night's Republican debate. Hillary once pulled a similar stunt in Little Rock. She showed up to spoil the rally where a rival of her husband announced that he would run against Bill in his last race for governor, and the next morning the story was all about her.

You can measure the size of the butterflies in Hillary's tummy by the enthusiasm, forced though it may have been, with which she greeted the endorsement of Barbra Streisand, a not particularly welcome guest at the Clinton White House after Hillary sniffed unfamiliar perfume in a familiar bed. But after Oprah Winfrey threw in with Barack Obama, the former first lady's wise men figured they had to come back with a Hollywood diva of their own. Hillary decided she had to be big about Babs.

Eventually Hillary will have to show substance. If she and her idiot hubby think the Dem boys were rough on her, wait until she has to debate really any of the Republican candidates...she’s out of her league. The curtain will be pulled back eventually.

The Toon did Streisand?

Fictionalized in Christopher Buckley's hilarious novel "No Way to Treat a First Lady". Highly recommended if you like to laugh.

Eventually Hillary will have to show substance.

John Kerry still hasn't shown any substance. Let's hope they will both have the same resume soon.

“the curtain will be pulled back eventually...”

nice to contemplate..but don’t underestimate the “american electorate” for tenacity. they will elect her no matter what they may see behind the curtain. she is “their man”.
(fourty years, and more, of leftist indoctrination will be seen in the 2008 elections.) IMHO

Yeah but you can be sure he didn’t share any of his coke stash with her. Hell she could do the whole staff in one nostril.

I do know one thing that is true.

Over the last few years the media has universally painted Hillary as the smartest woman in the world. She is, they say, the best and brightest of the super females.

Then on TV, in a Debate, she is asked a question that most observers believed she had anticipated and was going to knock out of the park. Russert was not trying to set her up. Like the other media fools, Russert likely believed his own stories. Hillary was the smartest woman in the world and if he asked her tough questions she was certain to knock them out of the park. It would be Hillary the queen of home run city.

After the debate, Russert could state, “I asked Hillary the toughest questions I could think of and the smartest woman in the world handled them with ease. What a fantastic performance”

But that, to Russert’s and nearly everyone else in the media’s surprise, Hillary handled the question like an illiterate air head who had once taken a course in stupidity and flunked.

I remember 1980. They painted Jimmy Carter as the brilliant nuclear scientist who was the smartest man to ever be president. They ran story after story saying that if the economy was bad and our hostages could not be recovered, then it was because the job was too big for the brilliant President Carter and that dumb rumped Reagan could only make things far worse. They said Carter only proved that the job of president was way to big for just one super man. That we needed to consider breaking it up into two jobs. For certainly if Carter could not fix the economy and bring the hostages home.. no man on earth could.

Reagan, they told us, was a dumb actor who could only read lines into a camera. With out his handlers he would be meat on the table for the brilliant Jimmy Carter in their coming debate.

Then came the debate and it turned out to be the brilliant leader against a very stupid dummy. It just turned out it was Reagan who was the brilliant leader and it was Carter who was the stupid dummy.

You will notice that after Reagan took office we have not heard of the job being too big for one man. Not once.. not ever again.

There is a huge danger in painting a candidate to be more than he or she is. It makes the public expect perfection and when they get a lot less than they expect they turn against that candidate. On the other hand when a candidate is mis-underestimated by the media, and he turns out to perform just reasonably well, the over hyped candidate loses.

They should ask Carter, Gore and Kerry how over promoting a democratic candidate while trashing the Republican candidate works in practice.

But as the CNN debacle proves the media is not even smart enough to understand how to cover its tracks.

Well like they say .. if you go to college and major in pre-med and flunk out, change your major to one of the sciences. If you are flunking out of science change your major to pre law. If you are flunking out of pre law change your major to business administration, if you are flunking out of BA, then change your major to education, if You are then flunking out of education change your major to psychology, and if you are flunking out of psychology change your major to journalism.. NO one has ever flunked out of Journalism.

I gotta get that Buckley book. LOL. Those lame-brains thinking they can actually deal with deoms like (Ras)putin and the infamous Iranian while doing drugs and having sex randomly, throwing lamps during marital tantrums-—there is no time for that. A leader has to be sharp, intelligent, tough, discerning, disciplined, appropriately fed and rested and, Hillary, EXERCISE, have a relationship with the Almighty Creator, NOT the almighty dollar, have ehtics, morals, judgment, manage time..you can’t be stalking after your husband’s girlfriends or plotting capers about how to put documents back. Hillary ain’t it.

I like the Maginot metaphor. Besides money, her other Maginot Line is the wall she has erected to prevent herself from every having to answer a serious question. A Republican candidate ought to be able to drive his tanks right around that — unless, of course, Hillary decides not to debate a mean, partisan Republican.

Babs thought she was Bill’s #1. She is reported to have gotten pissed when she witnessed Bill leching on Mondale’s daughter saying, “How many grammy’s has she won?”. Coincidentally, one of Monica’s blowups occurred when she was blocked at the WH gate because Bill was busy with Mondale in the oval oriface.

As much as I would like Hillary’s campaign to implode, I don’t
see her in big trouble if she loses in Iowa and New Hampshire.
If that was to carry over into some of the others as well it would be trouble for her.
