WASHINGTON - Trade using surface transportation between the U.S. and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose nearly 6 percent in September compared with a year ago, according to government data released Thursday.

Trade between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico reached $66.77 billion in September, according to the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Through the first nine months of the year, trade rose 3.9 percent to $591.8 billion.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moves on land.

Imports rose 3.7 percent to $37.57 billion and exports of $29.2 billion represented a 7.9 percent increase compared with September 2006.

Trade with Canada rose 5.6 percent to $42.65 billion in September, while trade with Mexico rose 5.4 percent to $24.12 billion, according to the government data.

LOL!

Interesting news. It looks like our trade deficit with our immediate neighbors is shrinking a bit. I suspect the weak dollar is helping a bit in that regard.

Both our exports and our imports grew. Our exports just grew faster.

If they are losing factories to China, why did our imports from them increase?
