Weekend Talk Show *Preview* for 12/1 - 11/2/07 (not the live thread)
Network and Cable News Shows | December 1, 2007 | Network and Cable News

Posted on 12/01/2007 9:03:18 AM PST by Phsstpok

I'm changing up the format slightly this week.  I'm going to post the raw data for the shows in order to beat the now early in the day Saturday shows.  Then, as I get each of the shows guests researched I'll repost that shows info on the thread with the links.  Also, please notice the 3 hour CSPAN Book TV interview with Newt on Sunday.  They do archive a stream on their web site, I believe, if you want to watch the main Sunday shows and still see this.

Show by Show Preview

Below are the topics and guests announced for these programs, along with my take on the "memes" that the shows are trying to push.  With each guest's name are a series of links that I found in a web search that helped me get a handle on who they are and what their likely positions will be when they are interviewed.

Special note: Sunday Dec 2 CSPAN Book TV, 12-3 PM ET, Newt Gingrich, live

Sunday at 12:00 PM, and Monday at 12:00 AM
In Depth: Newt Gingrich
Send email Send questions for the author to Book TV

The Weekend Talk Show Preview is up

I'm changing up the format slightly this week.  I've posted the raw data for the shows in order to beat the now early in the day Saturday shows (didn't quite make it, but close).  Then, as I get each of the shows guests researched I'll repost that shows info on the thread with the links.

The completed analysis will cross posted to my blog at

http://wizards.townhall.com/

No sample of  my usually witty commentary yet as I haven't written it, check back later...

But what fascinates me is how eager people were to believe the worst about Taylor -- how ready to stuff a young man's death into a box labeled "pathology" and call it a day -- in the absence of supporting evidence. Apparently, "innocent until proved guilty" doesn't apply to young black men even when they're the victims of violent crime.

I wonder if Mr. Robinson realizes the irony of what he writes here. Think Duke Lacrosse.

LOL. I was going to make a comment about Jim Webb, but I much prefer what Mark Kilmer has to say: “And if you watch MTP, you’ll get to see Jim Webb yawn, slaver, scratch himself, and mumble. It’s what he does.”

Bahbah, I still think if we all really concentrated on annoying Webb at every turn, we could get him to go nutso on live TV.

What can I say? I have these fantasies from time to time..

Heh, I think Kilmer sees in him just what you do. I think you both are right.

Robinson is a real piece of work. I guess he’d technically be a Trotskyite, but he’s a wanna be Stalinist, IMO. He’s so far left he’s in danger of falling of the edge of the flat Earth he lives on and he’s so clueless about reality that he’s picking up his pace because he thinks it’s the finish line.

You probably already realize this but you still might consider changing along with the programs to suit your time frame better. Whatever that might be.

By the way, we always quickly switch to FNC before the power player of the week comes on. Liz Trotta is on and she has been great week in and week out.

OK, here's the deal: since last week I didn't get the ratings until a few days ago, I will post the ratings I missed, from three weeks ago and two weeks ago, here. I have fortunately found a source (the NBC press release Web site, of all places) for the ratings that has turnover in less than a week (and they also have Late Edition ratings, which I didn't have available to me in the past), meaning I'll be able to post last week's ratings (instead of the previous "two weeks ago" ratings) in the main thread on Sunday... so here goes:

SUNDAY TALK SHOW RATINGS ANALYSIS

Nielsen Media Research ratings composite for Sunday, November 11, 2007
PROGRAM
VIEWERS
CHG
NBC MEET THE PRESS
3,576,000
-106,000
CBS FACE THE NATION
2,210,000
-564,000
ABC THIS WEEK
2,685,000
-334,000
FOX NEWS SUNDAY
1,899,000
-250,000
CNN LATE EDITION
  443,000
- 90,000

Nielsen Media Research ratings composite for Sunday, November 18, 2007
PROGRAM
VIEWERS
CHG
NBC MEET THE PRESS
3,799,000
+223,000
CBS FACE THE NATION
2,786,000
+575,000
ABC THIS WEEK
2,747,000
+ 62,000
FOX NEWS SUNDAY
1,840,000
- 59,000
CNN LATE EDITION
  446,000
+  3,000
Overall, the past few weeks of ratings have been very volatile and so it's hard to make any sense of the week-to-week numbers. I find it hard to believe that, for instance, Face the Nation would gain and lose half a million viewers week to week when it only has 2.5 million on average in the first place. I chalk it up to Nielsen's methodology. Losing ground these past few weeks was Fox News Sunday, who lost about 300,000 over two weeks. The consistent gains these past few weeks came from Meet the Press, who other than the 11/11 week where everyone lost viewers, have been on an upward trend (despite some rather weak guests).
Data derived from Nielsen Media Research ratings for live broadcasts as publicized by sites including the NBC-Universal Media Village, ABC Medianet, TV Newser, TV By the Numbers, Inside Cable News and Media Life Magazine. Numbers for Fox News Sunday and Meet the Press include numbers from prime time replays on Fox News Channel and MSNBC, respectively. All numbers (c)2007 Nielsen Media Research.

I actually like doing this thread this way, seperating the "raw post" from any analysis.  Totally separately I have a VERY COMPLICATED life right now and there isn't a prayer that I can spend the time on an in depth analysis of this stuff right now.  I'll take a pass at that tomorrow morning.... maybe... after I finish up the awards for last weeks thread... maybe.  I hope I'm not ruining anyone's day by completely collapsing this way.  I'm now going to go out in the garden and eat some worms.  I hope to do better next week...

'night all.
