37 Illegals found hiding inside semi

"Nearly 40 undocumented immigrants were found hiding behind several feet of bell peppers in a semi-tractor early Sunday. A Tolleson resident was walking by the truck on the 9600 block of West Harrison Street shortly before midnight and told police he saw people getting out of the truck and into a dark-colored SUV.

Thank YOU Cindy!

Accused pigeon smuggler stopped at US-Canadian border

Two Canadian men have been slapped with $1,000 fines and may face criminal charges after trying to smuggle four pigeons into the U.S.

Authorities say the men were stopped at the border crossing in Lewiston, New York, Sunday and had the pigeons in their coat pockets, wrapped and taped from neck to tail.

One man told Customs and Border Protection officers that he's a pigeon collector and was taking the birds to trade or sell to his uncle in the U.S.

People bringing in pet birds are required to have them inspected to guard against diseases like bird flu.

Mexican farmers block border with US to protest free trade accord

Some 200 Mexican farmers blocked on Tuesday the Cordoba-Americas bridge linking the country with the United States to protest the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The farmers demand a revision of the agreement among Mexico and its northern neighbor of the United States and Canada, which lifts tariffs for U.S. and Canadian exports of corn, beans, sugar and milk powder.

The measure will damage Mexico's corn and bean farming, two basic food for local people, said Victor Quintana, head of the Farmers' Democratic Front that organized the protest.

The farmers closed the bridge that links Ciudad Juarez in Mexico and El Paso in the U.S. state of Texas at 0:00 a.m. Tuesday (0700 GMT) and the blockage was expected to last 13 hours, Quintana said.

Thanks Cindy. They interest me too, especially since carrier pigeons can transmit messages - borders or no borders.

“Saudi Arabia: The Vitriolic Imam And Death Threat Phone Messages”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A strange story comes from Arab News today. An imam has been jailed for sending death threats to the senior member of the local branch of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Hail, Saudi Arabia. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Hammad received the death threats on his mobile phone after his ministry had fired an imam from his role as a prayer leader. The sacking happened after the Ministry ordered the local imam to desist from making anti-Western political slogans during his sermons. When the imam would not comply with the order and was suspended, he then sent the threats. This led to a court case brought at the Hail religious court.

The imam had argued with the demands to stop condemning the West in his sermons, justifying that it was acceptable in Islam to wish for bad things for Western countries’ governments. The imam did not deny sending the death threats, and was jailed for seven months, with an additional 150 lashes. Today, the imam will have his appeal against the sentence heard at the Saudi Cassation Court.”

“Deadly bomb blast strikes Colombo”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”There was a Claymore (landmine) attack targeting an army bus carrying troops,” a military official at the scene told Reuters.

The official said there were “about 11 soldiers” on board the bus.

Most of the victims were civilians while a few soldiers were also admitted with shrapnel injuries, news agency AFP quoted hospital director Hector Weerasinghe as saying.”

“’Sudden jihad syndrome’ poses domestic risk”
By Sara A. Carter
January 2, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Dec. 6 report by the Texas Public Safety Department’s Bureau of Information Analysis warns officials not to dismiss individual or homegrown terror cells as “wannabes,” saying they pose a credible threat to homeland security.

“Oftentimes, these attackers are dismissed as suffering from mental health issues, but their own words and writings reveal an affiliation with Islamic supremacy or an affinity for Islamic extremism,” said the report, which was distributed to federal, state and local law enforcement in Texas. “As a result, law enforcement should not be too quick to judge their attacks as having no nexus to terrorism.”

It said they might act with the intention of eventually joining al Qaeda or the jihad movement overseas.”

“llinois Man Accused of Setting Apartment Fire That Killed Pregnant Daughter, Her Family”
Tuesday, January 01, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MARKHAM, Ill. — A suburban Chicago man is accused of setting an apartment fire — killing his pregnant daughter, her husband and their young child — because the son-in-law didn’t ask permission for the marriage, prosecutors said.

Subhash Chander, 57, of Oak Forest was ordered held without bond Tuesday on three counts of first-degree murder, one count of intentional homicide of an unborn child and one count of aggravated arson.

Prosecutors allege Chander used gasoline to start the fire late Saturday. The India native told police he disliked his son-in-law because he belonged to a lower caste and had married his daughter without his consent, said Cook County First Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Milan.

“His son-in-law was beneath him in his opinion,” Milan said.”
