The kids and I will wait until the second week to see it.

Don’t like waiting in long lines and we like to get good seats.

I don’t think we’ll grow horns or tails while viewing the movie.

The film's trailers strive to connect it to Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" (also New Line), but its closer thematic relative is C.S. Lewis' Jesus allegory "The Chronicles of Narnia." Pullman, a former teacher and stated atheist, has said that "His Dark Materials" was, in part, written to counter the overt Christian sentiment of the "Narnia" books - which the British writer has variously described as "infantile," "morally loathsome" and "nauseating drivel."

Again the best message to these film is no reaction just dont go. Producers only care about box office and merchandising, if you see a bunch of golden compass merchandise at the 99 cent store in july you will know it died a gruesome death.

I read both “The Golden Compass” and “The Subtle Knife” several years ago and was appalled. The first was interesting enough for me to finish (although the themes bothered me) and the anti-Christian themes escalated the further I read.

I’ve explained to both kids why we wouldn’t be seeing the movie and they understand. Atheism is one thing but the blatant contempt for Christianity is a different issue. I’d rather not line Pullman’s pockets, so I’ll wait for the next Narnia films. A friend of mine is in England working on Narnia, and I’d rather give him some of my money instead.

Doesn't really sound like a major assault on Christianity, more like an intellectual exercise which is not going to work out as a movie.

If it does flop, it will be interesting to see if some of the
evangelical atheists assert it was because the movie didn't
stay fully faithful to the atheist themes of the book.

I suspect that long lines and lack of good seats won't be a problem for this film.

That...and more, I suspect.
It's a Trojan Horse, sufficiently sanitized in the hopes the
boxoffice will be large enough to green-light a film of the next
book in Pullman's trilogy.

It will be interesting if this will be a fat "Cash Cow" for succeeding
Pullman-based films with the atheism amped up more and more...
or if it will be a haggard, moribund steer that can
"hardly make it out of the gate".

The left-wing Guardian gave it 4 stars, so you know it is liberal drivel.

I read the total budget for this anti-Christian propaganda is at $205 million.

I will wager that enough kids see it to make it a hit. Not many adults will see it, unless they are progressives (like some friends of ours who love Hillary, but can’t think of a single reason WHY they want her as President).

I predict a respectable first weekend gross followed by a steep dropoff once word of mouth gets going. I highly doubt this film makes a profit, given it's cost. As for your other comment, no one REALLY wants Hillary to be President. Once the aura of inevitabliity disappears her campaign will implode.

The young crowd will be awed by the special effects and won't even think anything about the underlying message. If there is enough action, no one will give any attention to the dialog. Much ado about nothing.

My local theater has one showing of the movie daily.

I guess it isn't drawing in the atheists by the thousands.

Pretty stupid if you ask me to do a movie which pretty much would offend about 90 % of Americans religious views, but hey, I'm not in Hollyweird, so what do I know?

The author completely failed in his efforts to subvert Christianity in the book - good writer, bad athiest? It’s nothing but a fantasy. We’re seeing the movie this afternoon.

All religious politics aside, Daniel Craig has a lot of audience goodwill coming off “Casino Royale.” I hope he, at least, gets some good notices out of this.

That's really weird.

I checked the movies yesterday on yahoo to see what was playing and it was listed, 7:00 pm showing.

I look today and it is gone, but scheduled for the 7th with four time slots showing.

BTW, Lions for Lambs is listed for one showing. Hehe

Pullman has pretty much said his books are intended to subvert christianity, his intnt is to be the polar opposite of C.S. Lewis.

If you’re not offended by it and like for your kids to feel the same then of course go see it.

Better yet buy it and show it regularly.

But those Christians here who are tired of Hollywood’s steady denigration of our culture have the right to reject it same as you do to endorse it.

LdSentinal: I read the total budget for this anti-Christian propaganda is at $205 million.

damondonion: Losing 180 million dollars on a movie would teach most people some sort of a lesson.

Here are the numbers from Box Office Mojo:

THE GOLDEN COMPASS
Production Budget: $150 million
Don't know about the advertising & marketing budget.

Here are the comparable numbers for "V", a movie which is so loathsome that I have never been able to sit down and watch the entire thing when it comes on HBO:

V FOR VENDETTA
Production Budget: $54 million
Domestic Box: $70,511,035
Foreign Box: $62,000,000
By comparison, these are the Narnia numbers:
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE
Production Budget: $180 million
Domestic Box: $291,710,957
Foreign Box: $453,073,000

THE KIDMAN CURSE

You know, when you look at what happened to poor Mimi Rogers [although, to her credit, it looks like she really turned her life around after she got out of what must have been a hellish marriage], you almost get the feeling that Nicole Kidman has, in the long run, gotten exactly what she deserved.

Boy, I hate to say that - because Nicole Kidman is one of the most beautiful women who ever walked the face of the earth - but you have to wonder whether - beneath that glorious exterior of hers - there isn't a heart of coal.

If they are sneak-previewing the movie, then that means they aren't satisfied with it

Leftists in the media create movies and TV programs to promote an agenda. They don’t make movies and TV programs for entertainment, and then throw in a few lines to promote their biases.
The entertainment is to get the audience to watch it, and to keep watching it, and to pay little attention to the propaganda, while it gets into the subconcious mind and works its evil.
Examples of this are the evil characters who always just happen to be wearing a cross around their neck. Or the crucifixes in the background in the home of the evil character.

I still don’t see anything any worse than Inherit the Wind. THAT is basically a nazi propaganda flick directed against Christianity and Christians. It’s an anti-Christian equivalent of Der Ewige Jude.
