Russia Russia to showcase new-generation subs at maritime exhibition 21:36 | 03/ 12/ 2007
MOSCOW, December 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will present its new-generation Amur-1650 class submarine at an international maritime exhibition in Malaysia, Russia's state-controlled arms exporter said on Monday.
The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2007 exhibition will take place on December 4-8 at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Center (MIEC).
"The submarines will include Project 636 [submarines] with an integrated missile complex, Club-S, and the next-generation Amur-1650 submarine," Rosoboronexport said in a press release.
The Project 677 or Lada-class submarines have been designed to engage surface ships and submarines as well as to perform surveillance, mine laying, and special operation forces deployment missions.
Long range anti-ship missiles, rockets, torpedoes and mines can be fired from the torpedo tubes at the bow.
The ninth edition of the biennial LIMA is expected to be the biggest ever with more than 250 companies from 26 countries taking part in the aerospace exhibition alone.
They include Australia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Hong Kong, India, Germany, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Spain.
Looks like Los Angeles class - what is this, Russia’s 2.0 version?
Where is the DSRV that comes with each Russian sub introduction ?
In what way is it similar??
No it does not. I have been on LA Class submarines. It just looks like a modified Kilo.
To me there is not enough detail to tell how close they are. Don’t even see fair water diving planes. Maybe a little similar from the outside.
Ever been in the “mudhole” ? What a nasty place.
Are these “nucular” powered subs?
Nope-diesel/electrics with an option for mounting an AIP system.
Are their sonars whale-friendly? U.S. judges want to know.

How many can they deploy?
One? Two?
Now that’s funny.
Captain Tupelov was not available for comment.
Does this include the new generation High-Tech Screen Door?
Anyone who remembers the Lada sedans of the 1970’s and 1980’s knows how unfortunate this particular designation is ...
Remeber the old joke:
Man walks into a caryard and says: “Can you give me a wing mirror for a Lada?”
The owner thinks, shrugs and replies “Yeah, that’s a fair swap.”
Cripes, they must be about 2000 dollars a copy and come with screen door hatches.
Given their mission and the medium they operate it, it’s no surprise that most submarines look very much alike. There’s only a few ways you can build one that work, and most have been fine-tuned to the max.
This doesn’t look like a Los Angeles, but it does look like most other diesel/electric boats I’ve seen. If it wasn’t for the cutaway, you could park it next to a German, French or Italian boat of the same general type and very few people would be able to tell them apart. I couldn’t.
IF you are talking about the number of subs in use, then Russia has around 2 Amur/Lada class boats in service/or about to enter service, while China has inducted around 10 Kilo-636 class boats in recent years.
