Dixie Chick Urges Donations to Defense Fund for Murderers
Fox News ^ | December 03, 2007 | Roger Friedman

The Dixie Chicks have a new controversy on their hands. Lead singer Natalie Maines is urging people to contribute money to a defense fund for three Arkansas men that she (and many others) believe were wrongly convicted of killing three children in 1993.

Maines writes her plea on the Dixie Chicks Web site, which has already been answered by several celebrities including, I am told, Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Eddie Vedder, Jack Black and Henry Rollins.

"I'm writing this letter today because I believe that three men have spent the past 13 years in prison for crimes they didn't commit," Maines' message begins.

"On May 5, 1993 in West Memphis, Ark., three 8-year-old boys, Steve Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore were murdered.

"Three teenage boys, Damien Echols, Jesse Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin were convicted of the murders in 1994. Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley received life sentences without parole, and Damien Echols sits on death row.

"I encourage everyone to see the HBO documentaries, 'Paradise Lost' and 'Paradise Lost 2' for the whole history of the case."

Right now, Maines’ main goal is to raise money for the West Memphis 3. To that end, she’s directing fans to the Web site www.wm3.org.

Overturning convictions is more common these days, thanks to more sophisticated forensics. There are obviously now dozens of stories about murder convictions that have been overturned thanks to DNA testing.

Plays and projects like "The Exonerated," for example, have shown mistakes made by juries and prosecutors.

Seldom do you see stupidity so brazenly displayed:

"I encourage everyone to see the HBO documentaries, "Paradise Lost" and "Paradise Lost 2" for the whole history of the case."

Let's say the documentaries are 1 or even 2 hours in length. Does she really think you can properly cover all the details which the investigation and prosecution covered? You couldn't even cover the pre-sentence investigation in, say 5 hours, of documentary.

She is a moron. Those who empower her with their $$ should be ashamed of themselves. I have not contributed a cent to her or any of the Dixie Chicks or related merchandising. It's going to stay that way.

I saw the two HBO documentaries on this case. The producers do a good job. But modern “documentaries” are not a righteous quest for truth. They are celluloid propaganda carefully crafted to serve a preconceived agenda to an audience who already suspects these three underprivileged Arkansas teenagers were railroaded by corrupt lawmen. Then Maines wants people to read or watch a play called, “The Exonerated” to get in the right mind for righteous indignation. Maybe we should also read “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

With the Dixie Chicks’ money they could hire a couple of the country’s top investigators and figure this crime out shortly. But then it wouldn’t be a cause celebre media circus.

I envision another year of canceled performances due to low ticket sales.

The Dixie Ditzes aren’t gonna get much traction around here.

The boys probably stumbled upon Echols, Misskelley, and Baldwin having sex in the woods. They died because they were witnesses.

“The Dixie Ditzes aren’t gonna get much traction around here.”

I understand that; but, if you ignore who’s behind this, it seems right to double-check cases, where modern forensics might exonerate someone.

I used to work with a girl who went to school with the West Memphis Three. She said she had no doubt they were guilty, but everone of course has opinions.
