Actually people who do NOT denounce Mohammads' Islam are every bit as bigoted as those who refuse to denounce Hitler's Nazi party. Both men were evil tyrants who started a brutal reign of terror.
Today the liberals have grown the spine to denounce Hitler, because he is gone (also he had an early falling out with Stalin which used to be a liberal darling). But they don't have the spine to denounce the evil that is still alive and growing.
Now not every Muslim is evil, as not every "good German" was. But in both cases the movement was and is.
The Los Angeles Times writer is evidently a public school graduate and consequently unaware that by 1529 muslims had been at war with Christians for well over 800 years, and that they had fought their way into southern France within a few years of Mohammed's death.
Sometimes an irrational loathing is completely rational. But a journalism grad is almost always profoundly ignorant of the world he writes about.
Spencer also says that the rule of death for Muslim apostates only applies to those leaving Islam after puberty.

It looks like the notion that you are a Muslim if your father is a Muslim can possibly be traced solely to anti-Obama Internet chatter.
As far as I can determine from a little research, the way a person becomes a Muslim is to recite, and inwardly believe, the Islamic creed called the Shahadah. "There is no God except Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet."
There are some countries which legally classify you as a Muslim if you are born there as the child of a Muslim father.
It is also true that a Muslim father is supposed to raise his children as Muslims. But this is not quite the same thing as saying that they are Muslims because of their father.
There also seems to be a notion in Islam that everyone in the world is born a Muslim, but believers must say the Shahadah when they grow up. (Perhaps there is some logical inconsistency here.)
This is what I have found out through some Internet research. If you can prove me wrong on the father thing, go for it.

Apparently Obama attended a Catholic school during his last three years in Indonesia, starting at approximately the age of 7, and recited Catholic prayers there. So presumably, if he ever recited the Shahadah, it was as very young child, long before puberty. I'll let you research whether this sequence of events would make him a continuing Muslim under Islamic law.

I tend to ignore such chatter. The Koran itself (Sura 2) identifies the children of Muslim men are Muslim.

He identified himself as a Muslim at the age of 10 in Catholic school in Hawaii. He didn't convert till he was an adult. Never once did he renounce Islam. The man who converted him was a muslim.
"Obama's mother, divorced from Obama's father, married a man from Indonesia named Lolo Soetoro, and the family relocated to the country from 1967-71. At first, Obama attended the Catholic school, Fransiskus Assisis, where documents showed he enrolled as a Muslim, the religion of his stepfather."
"The document required that each student choose one of five state-sanctioned religions when registering — Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic or Protestant. Gibbs said he wasn't sure why the document had Obama listed as a Muslim."
This rule is not stated in Sura 2. Apparently Islamic law does require that the children of a Muslim man are to be raised as Muslims, but this is not the same thing as saying that the child of a Muslim father is a Muslim. I'll let you find the place in the Koran where this rule of child-rearing originates. It does not appear to be in Sura 2.
