'Twas just before Christmas, when all throughout Lansing Taxpayers were shouting, bureaucrats were all dancing Earlier in '07; a new tone was set Services we'll threaten and taxes we'll get
State Deputy Directors were singing in chorus Our shelves are all empty, you must seek monies for us We'll need more French wine, let the people drink water The budget will suffer, tax incomes we oughta
The administration's new appointees were snuggled warm their beds While Troopers in springtime were hitting the treads The State of the State sought a breathtaking vision of seventeen new programs worth taxing decision
Then, on the Capitol lawn. there arose such a clatter The legislature looked out to see what was the matter State administrators - arm in arm - echoed in unified voices Were told to shout loudly that we have no more choices
Tell'em we're cut to the bone, and we need extra spending Replace the small business tax, or the world will be ending State Department Directors, how ought they endure? With just a 100K plus, they'll be impoverished for sure
When, what to Lansing's wondering eyes should appear A miracle - a sales tax on service- it was ever so near With just six percent here and six percent there we'll put names in a hat and throw them up in the air
More rapid than eagles the names came back down Picking the On list, politicos swiftly left town
On, landscaper! On, carpet cleaner! On, tour guide and driver! On, Janitor! On consultant! On, baby-shoe bronzer! To the top of the list! Pay your tax; don't you shirk! Your business must pay for each government perk!
And then, in a twinkling, the taxpayer awoke You can't ask us for more when we're already broke Is there no where to cut, is there no where to trim? Should the government grow rich, while our paychecks grow thin?
Family businesses will fail; maybe go underground Or, they'll move to the states where the climate is sound They'll cut their expenses; jobs lost by the scores When worse comes to worse, they'll be closing their doors
Gas prices are high, bankruptcies and foreclosures abound What does it take to convince you the economy's unsound? With humble opinion, we think that it's cruel While the Castle grows stout; the peasants eat gruel
So, with axes for taxes and recall petitions People called back lawmakers from their long intermissions
"Oh. OH!!!. You're serious!" the left-side retorts We thought you'd not mind paying more for resorts Give us a day; we're ninety-five percent sure That the folks in the lobby can find us a cure
With the wink of an eye and a nod of the head We must replace the service tax but keep the Treasury fed And, EUREKA. we've got, we can keep living large To the new income tax we'll add a new business charge
As taxpayers prepare; let us agreeably stress You must forgive and forget those that started this mess At least in the Beltway, this is quite certain No attention is paid to folks behind the thin curtain
So. laying his finger aside of his nose The Speaker Pro-Tem to the rostrum he rose A new tax was formed as he banged down the gavel "With all problems now mended, I grant permission to travel"
But we heard the exclaim, ere he drove off in good cheer Happy Repeal to you all, let me make myself clear We'll start this same process. in the spring of next year
Too bad that conservatives aren’t more aggressive in pointing out the failings of the economy in Michigan.
