Note the assembled Venezuelan generals and admirals falling lock step into place and repeating the platitude (their enthusiasm seems lukewarm and forced).

If Chavez tried it, would the Venezuelan military voluntarily assist Chavez in a coup d'etat, overthrow him, or splinter?

That is the million dollar question, Hugo has stacked the deck though with a cadre of Cuban advisors who have access to the military brass and their families.

I believe this is precisely the question that held up the announcement of the election results. When Chavez concluded he didn't have the military behind him, he reluctantly accepted the NO vote, trying to put the best face on it.
