INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The body of a popular musician killed in a wave of entertainment-related violence in Mexico is expected to be returned today to Indiana, where he lived since 2003.

Thirty-5-year-old Sergio Gomez was killed last weekend after performing with his top-selling group, K-Paz de la Sierra, in Morelia, Mexico.

His music was popular in the United States and Mexico. 5 of the band's albums have reached the Top 10 on Billboard magazine's Latin music chart.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon at a mortuary on Indianapolis' west side. Gomez had lived in Avon, just west of Indianapolis.

Although not known for songs glamorizing the drug business, Gomez had reportedly received death threats urging him not to appear Morelia, a hotbed of the drug trade.

Gee from the title I assumed there was an accident. Sounds like he was assassinated by the drug lords who now run Mexico.

It’s a trend of the narco-terrorists in Mexico targeting musicians and tv stars, usually because they have spoken out against the drug trade and violence. Just the other day some woman singer was shot in the throat. A day later while in her hospital bed, someone came into the room and finished the job.

If the body is “returning” it’s going to take a while to zombie step that far.

If it’s returned as in the story’s text it can take transportation.

Thanks for the info. My cousins wanted me to go to Mexico for Thanksgiving. I don’t have a passport, so I declined. Nothing could get me to go there now.

Yes, that is MS-13, but they are Salvadorans, not Mexicans. The guy killed in this article was what you and I would call a cowboy.

Gee from the title I assumed there was an accident.

Nope tortured and finally strangled.

Sounds like he was assassinated by the drug lords who now run Mexico.

It was a little more regional in this particular case, by one of the drug lords who runs the Mexican state of Sinola.

That's a pretty common convention in newswriting for broadcast outlets, whose teleprompter writing style sometimes carries over to their website offerings.

As a former newspaperman, I find it has all the charm of fingernails on a blackboard.

Who writes these headlines?

In this case, TV station newswriters who often haven't headline tagged or slugged a story since journalism school. Which may be a bit unfair, since a lot of them are college or junior college interns, [in the newspaper racket, we used to call 'em *cubs*] as often chosen more for their HTML computer skills than their rewrites of wire service copy.

Not quite. More usually it's because they're allied as a favorite or *mascot* of an opposition group. In some cases, videotaped executions of rival cartel members have been made, set to the tune of popular narcocorridos, following which not only the killers are targeted for revenge, but also the musicians.

Sometimes the musicians are unaware of the use of the appropriation of their musical output for such uses. Sometimes they know damd well.

Here, enjoy the quaint culture of the Sinolan natives.

You found it, pal, and deserve the credit. I just advised you of the event, which was a bit difficult for me to overlook.

I suspect we're going to be seeing a lot more such events, often in cities far from the US southern border.
