Romney painter's facing inquiry
The Boston Globe ^ | 12/07/2007 | Maria Sacchetti and Connie Paige

A Peabody company that painted Mitt Romney's Belmont mansion in recent months is under investigation by state authorities for dodging labor laws and accused of relying on subcontractors that exploited workers, including illegal immigrants.

Romney hired Olympic Painting and Roofing to paint the salmon-colored house in August and the work was completed in October, according to Olympic. The company was the subject of a 2005 front-page article in the Globe saying that the state attorney general's office was investigating allegations that Olympic failed to pay overtime and other obligations through a system that misclassified workers as subcontractors instead of regular employees.

The Glob is apparently hard up for contentious controversy this morning. There musn’t be any homosexuals running around performing wondrous feats today.

After Katrina, I had the shingles replaced on my house. The person whom I contracted with was a local Caucasian who is well known. When the workers showed up to do the job, they turned out to be seven Mexicans. It was not my job to query these people as to whether they were illegals or not. That was the contractor’s responsibility.

I guess the Globe thinks employers hiring illegals is something out of the ordinary in this country.

Maybe they need to go and interview Liberal Bernie Ward over at KGO, San Francisco about some pictures on his computer.

It is the scenario of what would a responsible person do....something or nothing. Mitt chose nothing.

Deville has to catch these illegals and teach them a lesson they'll never forget!

The lesson of: free health insurance, protection from ICE, and [coming soon...]in-state tuition fees.

Maybe we should "query" these people?

Maybe the Glob could go check out the Keenedy and Kerry compounds?

Yeah, right.

Jorge Bush would have given them amnesty...

In all fairness to Romney...I dont know if I would be able to hire contractors around Orlando who didnt use illegals.

I think if we checked the records of all the candidates contracted work...we would dig up illegals everywhere...would love to check Hillary’s records

Only reason this is now an issue is because Romney has expressed pro-American/anti-illegal alien sentiments in recent months. Instead of pandering to illegals like Rudy, McCain, Huckabee, and all the Dems, Romney has not done so.

Over the last two years I have had a new roof, new Leaf Guard gutters, new windows, a new kitchen, and 5 trees removed. Am I responsible if one of the contractors has an illegal on their crew? There were Hispanic laborers on 4 of the 5 crews, the exception being Ukrainians falling the trees.

I’m not a Romney supporter, but I think it was a very cheap shot by Rudy to bring this up in the debate. Rudy lost points with me because of it.

being responsible and reporting the illegal activity of the contractor.....No, Mitt turned a blind eye...choosing instead to do nothing.....much like everyone else now in DC....makes me comfortable to send Mitt to DC...He will fit right in.

I’m sure it’s a problem in Orlando, but his house isn’t in Florida and you can still find contractor’s in Mass. that don’t use illegals. Something I don’t understand is why this keeps happening to him. It’s not like he cares about the $$$.

All this tells me is that the illegal alien problem is completely out-of-control!

And yet another reason why we need Duncan “the fence” Hunter as the GOP nomineee

I’m beginning to think I don’t want to be a contractor working for Romney — your company will be torn apart for political purposes.

I’ve met a few Eastern and Western Europeans here illegally also.

I wonder who polishes the office floors at night and takes out the trash, washes their windows, etc?

First, you’re right on about the homosexual line. Not a day goes by that they don’t have a story portraying homosexuality as a wondrous thing.
Someone wrote a fabulous letter to the Globe and asked how many illegals are out there delivering the paper to fine upstanding, suburban towms.

“It was not my job to query these people as to whether they were illegals or not. That was the contractor’s responsibility.”

I will tell any contractor doing work for me, that it is unacceptable for them to have illegal aliens working on my home.
If the contractor has a problem with that, fine; I’ll find someone else.
