Oh, please. Some of the numbers are more current, post-debate (the CNN/YouTube was 11/28). We’re already looking at another debate in two days.

Hunter is a huge bore; can always be counted on for the “I built that fence” line... nothing new. Great guy, but not quick on his feet, no sparkle.

Huck is still not the frontrunner overall; Rudy is.
And, relying one poll only provides distortion.

We have Thompson because conservatives ignored the conservatives in the race, and chose instead to look for someone who could “sell the message” better.

“Huck is still not the frontrunner overall; Rudy is.”

Agreed. The futures market still has Gui as the frontrunner overall. ...just meant that Huck was “a frontrunner” not “the frontrunner”...meaning Huck was in the ‘3 or 4 frontrunners’

BTW - Folks here that call him names like “Huckster” or “Elmer Gantry” just make the base more convinced Huckabee is the right man. Actually the same is true of any candidate and his supporters. I used to refer to Mayor Guiliani as “Rudy the Rumpranger” until I realized it just made me look uncouth and it hurt my attempts to sway Guiliani supporters. I “grew up” and stopped it.

Strongly agree re using real names vs. juvenile ridicule.

Yeah, though the last words I’d use to describe Mike Huckabee are “bright” and “shiny”.

I'm sure you are among those who will "give till it hurts", as he suggests to all his faithful disciples.

Hardly. I don't support Huckabee. I've defended him against charges that I didn't think were proven, and I've noted that in the circles I hang in he has been pretty popular.

I've only given money to Hunter and Thompson. (Mitt's my first choice but he has enough of his own money :-)).

Huckabee is 5th on my depth chart.

Social/moral conservatives are the base of the GOP

If a semi-socialist, big government, nanny state, open borders, religiously pretentious, pro-criminal, candidate is what this so-called "base" of the Republican party supports, I, as an anti-abortion, pro-family conservative will consider myself expelled as a "social conservative" and an orphan of the Republican party.

Huck seems like a nice guy, but I can’t vote for a nanny.

I cannot for the life of me understand why Fred Thompson polls so low.................

Not to worry. The numbers will be there as soon as Fred starts campaigning ;-)

Honestly, if Fred would just come a little more to the right on moral issues (and stop hiding behind federalism), he could woo me to him.

Right. He's "hiding behind" a central conservative principle. Forgive us if some of us view the Constitution as something more than an inconvenient obstacle to pushing policies we like.

That sort of thinking is exactly why Mike Huckabee is the worst possible candidate for the conservative movement. Eliminate federalism, smaller government, and free markets from the list of conservative principles, and you eliminate its appeal to anyone outside the "moral conservative base".

Conservatism as we know it will fade into irrelevancy, and the Republican Party along with it. That will be Mike Huckabee's legacy if he's nominated.

I also think you're absolutely right. Huckabee's appeal won't last once most Republican voters get a dose of some of his more novel policy ideas.

The main thing this poll does is paint a big target on Huckabee's chest, and Huckabee's been kind enough to provide his rivals with plenty of ammunition.

After all, while different Republicans value different issues and disagree on a lot of them, there's one thing virtually all Republicans agree on: we hate anyone who raises our taxes.

Ok so the media and the average person is falling behind here. Guiliani is toast. The media wondered why he was doing so well for so long and then just declared they were wrong. But his numbers have slowly eroded day by day, almost every day. What the media expected to happen has happened just very slowly. What is important to note is what is happening as people play closer attention. Guiliani falls, Huckabee surges. By the time Guiliani loses Iowa and NH people will barely remember he’s still in the race and he’ll probably poll in the low double digits.

Huckabee is the clear frontrunner IMO. I picked up his contracts at 5 dollars at intrade. I wanted to buy a lot more at 10 but they make it so cumbersome to deposit money. At 20 cents I think he’s still a a bargain. Freepers should lay off on the attacks because we will be defending him in a general. He is winning in Iowa and SC. Is second in NV and SC. He is now second nationally. He trajectory is going one way. The more people pay attention the more gains. The more media exposure he gets the more he gains. When he wins Iowa he will gain more as the nation starts paying attention. He is just starting to raise money at a first tier rate. If he has done this much with nothing imagine when he starts spending and picks up IA and SC.

This is the real deal, not a fad. Huckabee has struck a nerve with people. I went to the Lincoln Day dinner in IA. After getting pictures with Romney, McCain, and Guiliani I mentioned to my wife I wanted a picture with Huckabee as he was the only person with a darhorse chance. I missed the chance as he was on stage playing with his band but managed to get a picture awhile back at a concert he had in Clear Lake. I met Fred in NH on a sidetrip while visiting back home in NY. It was clear to me early on that an excellent speaker/former govern with a “everyman” quality and life story was a great candidate for this cycle.

If his showing so far isn’t enough to prove the point look at the positions of the other candidates...

Romney will be toast after IA. A NH victory is meaningless as we all know it’s almost his home turf. After losing IA and SC while spending countless millions etc how is he a real contender? Again, the more people pay attention, the more his numbers fall.

Fred is dead. He never took off. He was a media fad with a small loyal following on places like FR. He has recognition and money and is going nowhere. What is his path to victory? He will lose IA, lose NH, and lose SC. He has weak numbers across the board. What can possibly change this dynamic? I see nothing. He will likely be the first to bow out which likely helps Huckabee.

The only person I can see possibly upsetting Huckabee is McCain and it’s a longshot. A surprise win in NH and he will have a shot at an upset in SC. McCain is the only first tier candidate who does not seem to fall the closer attention people pay to the race. If people get nervous when Huckabee is the clear frontrunner McCain has a long shot at an upset.

I also bought Obama contracts at 20 and again when they fell to 10. Again, I wish it was easier to tranfer money into intrade because I would have bought more. Obama is still a bargain in the mid 20’s. Again, the more attention people pay the more he surges. Hillary’s #’s are collapsing in IA, NH, and SC. The closer we get the more he will surge. I simply never believed the Dems were stupid enough to give us the gift of a Hillary nomination. They know it will unite us and in general people are looking for an outsider, something different this election. Hillary is not that.

The mainstream media bet on a Hillary/Guiliani matchup. I call BS. Neither will be the nominee. What’s cool is that I stand to make quite a bit of cash betting against this nonsense.

Like they weren't stupid enough to give us the gift of Algore. And John F'n Kerry.

3rd parties are looking good to me too, but it ain’t over ‘til it’s over, so let’s hang on and see what happens. If my choice is between a liberal and liberal-lite, however, I’m not voting for either one.

Hunter hasn’t got the money to push his case. Unfortuante as his political views are the best in my view.

Thompson just hasn’t caught fire with the public. Maybe things will chane but the trend doesn’t look good.

Huckabee is a very effective speaker and presents a conservative face on most issues - the only weakspot being illegal invaders and he is apparently ameliorating his position on that subject.

Giuliani has problems with emerging skeletons.

Ron Paul is probably drawing any Republican who opposes the war in Iraq. His domestic views are conservative enough, but those people who are unhappy with the Iraqi war should re-assess their sentiments in light of recent events, and consider that Ron Paul, although he claims not to be an isolationist, is totally out of toouch with reality with respect to the Islamic world.

A Huckabee/Romney ticket might be the way to go.

The GOOD news is Hillary is going down like a lead weight and Obama the “newbie” is beating her.

Wait till they see what Huck did for those felons and rapists...and that he thinks Jesus wants him to be President.

And the Gitmo comments won’t help either.
