FRED THOMPSON

More God Talk: Thompson Doesn't Attend Church Regularly

Jonah's sick of the word Mormon. Well, more faith talk to come:

Asked about his religious beliefs during an appearance before about 500 Republicans in South Carolina yesterday, Fred Thompson said he attends church when he visits his mother in Tennessee but does not belong to a church or attend regularly at his home in McLean, Va., just outside Washington. The actor and former senator, who was baptized in the Church of Christ, said he gained his values from "sitting around the kitchen table" and said he did not plan to speak about his religious beliefs on the stump. "I know that I'm right with God and the people I love," he said, according to Bloomberg News Service. It's "just the way I am not to talk about some of these things."

Here we go. "How will the non-churchgoer factor play in Thompson's chances? Does he need to explain whether her fits the definition of Christian? Does it affect his apparell choices? Does he have to give the irregular churchgoer's version of The Speech?"

Arrrgh.

Who cares?

I don’t attend church for the simple reason I lost all faith in the institutions Man has raised up in worship of God.

Doesn’t mean I lack faith in God. Doens’t make me a bad person.

Neither do I!

The problem is that in NJ God isn’t popular even with clergy!

So I suppose that when Hillary attends - homo and abortion, and constantly lying makes HER a real “Christian”? LOL!!!!

Perhaps, and what a sad commentary on the US that is. The rush to Huckabee is most disappointing.

Neither do I. In fact, aside from weddings, funerals, baptisms, and one Christmas Eve, I haven't been to church in about 20 years. Nevertheless, God is the Guiding Force in my life and the only Truth that there is. I am His entirely.

I think it stays an issue only because the pundits keep talking about it. Voters aren’t stupid. They know they are voting for President, not Pastor.

This is the reason Dobson said he would not jump onboard Fred’s bus. But let’s face it, it’s a bad idea to base your voting decision on the candidate’s religion. Just because a candidate is a Christian does not mean that they’d be a good President.

In fact it’s difficult to tell whether a candidate really is a Christian these days, particularly on the GOP side. They all claim to be.

I’d rather trust Fred to tell the truth than a lot of the pumped up phony types I’ve come across in life. I do go to Mass regularly and consider it a private matter. If someone with a genuine interest or inquiry asks about it, fine. It seems that at this point the whole matter of “politics and religion” are so intertwined and every little nit-picky nuance so elaborated on, that “politics IS religion” and vice-versa. I’m about sick of it.

Going to church is not a prerequisite for getting into Heaven.

I agree - while I have no problem with his faith or lack of faith - his campaign has been a major disappointment. It’s a shame too, because he’s the real conservative of the front-runners.

Of course, there is still time to get things going. I don’t want to throw a wet blanket on all the Fred cheerleaders in here.

He’s rather flippant regarding faith. I don’t think it should be a litmus test but I find his attitude a bit odd in regards to this and that he apparently, at his age, doesn’t even want to make time for church. Too busy being a Z-list actor I guess.

Reagan grew up in the same sort of denomination and also did not attend church regularly. On the other hand, Bill Clinton sang in a Little Rock church choir every Sunday so he could get his face on TV.

I agree with Fred—there’s a difference between churchgoing and religous/spiritual. Some of the most vile, hypocritcal, venom-filled people were the loudest singers in church on Sunday mornings.

No, Reagan grew up Disciples of Christ, which is different than Church of Christ - just for the record. Reagan later became a Presbyterian.

I’m a traditional catholic, but I really do not care if Fred goes to church regularly or not as far as voting for him is concerned. For his own sake, I wish he would as he has two small children, and we all can use regular exposure to the scriptures in our lives.

However, I remember in 1980 that Jimmy Carter was President and a regular going to church kind of guy. His opponent hardly ever went to church but was certainly infused with a faith in God. I voted for Carter’s opponent - Ronald Reagan, The rest is history.

“When Reagan arrived in Hollywood in 1938 on contract with Warner Brothers, Hollywood was far from the celebrity-crazed, hedonistic Tinseltown we know today.

Nor was it one of the quaint Puritan towns that dotted America’s midsection, such as Dixon, Ill., where Reagan’s childhood unfolded. He quickly joined the Hollywood Beverly Christian Church, which belonged to Disciples of Christ. He was not a regular church attendee, however. In fact, Kengor discovered that despite being quite religious, Reagan never thought going to church every Sunday was critical.

In an article he wrote in 1950 titled “My Faith,” he admitted not attending church “as regularly as I should. I suppose it’s true that a man can be religious without going to church.”

Reagan wasn’t a regular Christian church attender, but he had all the right instincts of a Christian. I think the same is true of Fred.

He’s a lot more my idea of a Christian than bill & hill and their 50-pound Bibles that they waved around outside the Church of Christ Without Christ or whatever it was called. More of a Christian than Obama, whose pastor never saw an abortion he didn’t like.

OCCASparky: “Some of the most vile, hypocritcal, venom-filled people were the loudest singers in church on Sunday mornings.”

But to be fair, vile, venom-filled people are a distinct minority in most churches. You’ll find hypocrites nearly everywhere, but at least most bible-believing churchgoers admit and repent of their hypocrisy.

However, I’ll admit church attendance isn’t necessarily a good measure of a person’s character, especially with politicians who have learned how to act religious in order to appeal to voters.
