Billy Joel doesn't sing on his anti-war song

NEW YORK (AP) -- Billy Joel has released a new pop single, the anti-war "Christmas in Fallujah." Just don't expect to hear his voice on it.

Billy Joel gave his newest song, "Christmas in Fallujah," to 21-year-old Cass Dillon.

At 58, Joel felt he was too old to sing the song, which was inspired by letters the Piano Man received from soldiers in Iraq. So he gave it to Cass Dillon, a 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Long Island.

"I thought it should be somebody young, about a soldier's age," Joel said in a statement on his Web site. "I wanted to help somebody else's career. I've had plenty of hits. I've had plenty of airplay. I've had my time in the sun. I think it's time for somebody else, maybe, to benefit from my own experience."

-snip-

"Christmas in Fallujah" went on sale Tuesday on Apple Inc.'s iTunes. Net proceeds will be donated to Homes for Our Troops, which builds homes for severely wounded veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

We Came with the Crusaders
to save the holy land
:::
I’m fading from your memory
so I’m just as good as dead
:::
We are the armies of the empire
We are the legionnaires of Rome
:::
It’s Christmas In Fallujah
and we ain’t never coming home

Are you sure this wasn't written by Billy bin Laden?

The lyrics are just mindless drivel. Buzz words from the lamesteam media thrown into the blender, and voila! A song.

It doesn’t come across to me as being extremely leftist. Much of the sentiment is that of a soldier saying don’t forget us over here going through hell and don’t stop supporting us in the fight for freedom, otherwise we will become as irrelevant as the armies and empires of history.

I doubt it will be better than “Goodnight Saigon”. I love that song.

Merry Crhistmas from Fallujah

Hey! Finally, a new song coming out of liberal culture where someone's willing to utter the word "Christmas."

Why not "Happy Holidays from Fallujah"? I guess treason takes first priority over PC language. Must have been a dilemma, though.

I agree. The imagery of being crusaders or armies of the empire is a little off base, but the sentiment of fearing you’ll be forgotten is not unfounded.

I just wasn’t fond of the singer... Not a fan of the strained Bruce Springsteen “It hurts to sing this” style.

I’m a big fan of the old Billy Joel. Some of his old songs capture terrific American imagery. “Downeaster Alexa”, “Allentown”... good stuff.

I hate that singers and entertainers don’t always agree with me, but given that he’s giving to a good cause with this, and has given of himself to the troops before... I think he’s earned some artistic license before I’ll burn all his albums.

Does anybody believe that Billy Joel is receiving letters from our soldiers in Iraq?

Hell, no! Just another washed up 'celebrity' whose an expert on everything that is anti-American. Typical New York liberal dimocrat who will try to impose a socialist president to get the Red States under control and domination of the tax and grab liberals, i.e. Hillary Rob'em Clinton

I don’t know about you, but those stanzas seem like they were rather clumsily inserted into the rest of the song...

I’m thinking this was edited by someone, perhaps Dillon.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again:
Billy Joel has never made a single song that didn’t make me want to snap off the radio as soon as I heard the first opening notes.

Same thing with Springsteen with the exception of maybe one tune. You gotta be an east coast Vinnie to like either performer. I think they both suck.

Lord, at last someone I can agree with. Could never figure the interest in these two. Maybe we are just two twisted souls.

Give me an hour and I’ll write a better song than that about war or anything else. These are bumper-sticker lyrics designed to please Hollywood record producers who haven’t met a soldier in their lives.

I remember when the Iranian hostage crisis was in full swing, Billy would start off every show by flipping the bird at Iran.

He may be a lib, but he’s hardly anti-American, like a lot of other celebrities.

Billy Joel has always been a poster boy for whiny, self-indulgent, East Coast quasi-masturbatory narcissism (quite literally, if you’re old enough to recall “Captain Jack”). Springsteen on the other hand, has written complex and searching songs, and has displayed a solid musical knowledge of blues, jazz, and other uniquely American forms without crushing them under the weight of his ego. That he has at times gone off on silly political tangents and produced some mediocre stuff should not detract from the value of his best work.
